Le Concerto pour violon en mi mineur de Mendelssohn, chef-d’œuvre d’élégance et d’inspiration lyrique, ouvre la soirée avec éclat. Puis la Symphonie n° 9 « La Grande » de Schubert – que Mendelssohn contribua à faire découvrir après la mort du compositeur – déploie toute sa puissance radieuse. A devoted admirer of Schubert, Mendelssohn was among the first to recognize the greatness of his music and bring it to light. Under Philippe Herreweghe’s sensitive and luminous direction, this concert pays tribute to that artistic kinship. Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E minor, a masterpiece of elegance and lyrical inspiration, opens the evening in brilliant fashion. Then Schubert’s Symphony no. 9, “The Great”—which Mendelssohn helped unveil after the composer’s death—unfolds in all its radiant power.
