Simon Leoza – ACTE III

· par Frédéric Cardin

Quebec composer Simon Leoza is back with ACTE III, a new opus that follows on from, but does not repeat, the previous Albatross. While the latter sailed openly in neoclassical waters, close to those of Andréa Streliski, this third act surfs on cross-currents where electro makes more of a stir and drenches the still richly symphonic musical vessel of the young Montrealer with synthetic but elegant spray. Leoza adds a full chamber orchestra of almost twenty musicians (strings, woodwinds, brass) with keyboards and drums. In this way, the musician makes his own way through more exploratory latitudes, though always warm and reassuring in their panoramic beauty. There’s something very cinematic about this journey, where you can go from tempestuous agitation to contemplative calm. We’re swimming in a sonic triangle made up of Reichian minimalism, the vibrant tension of Ludwig Göransson’s Oppenheimer soundtrack and the neo-classical vocal caresses of Patrick Watson. Very pleasant and probably spellbinding in concert. Simon Leoza is embarking on a tour with this show that will take him all over Quebec and New Brunswick. Stay tuned for a performance near you.
