Comme Skrillex et Girl Talk avant lui, le DJ et producteur allemand Valentin Brunn privilégie les montages rapides et chaotiques lorsqu’il publie ses enregistrements EDM sous le nom de Virtual Riot. Né et élevé à Marl, en Allemagne, Brunn a lancé ce projet en 2011 avec l’EP From Space sur le label Phantom Hertz Recordings. Ce même label a sorti l’EP Phantom la même année, puis l’empreinte Quantum a publié l’EP SuperHuman en 2012. Sectionz Records a sorti son premier album There Goes Your Money en 2013, tandis que l’EP Sugar Rush est paru sur Audiophile Live la même année. En 2014, son EP We Are Not Alone a marqué le début de sa collaboration avec Discipline Recordings, qui a également sorti les EP Nightmare et Machinery en 2015, ainsi que Chemistry en 2016.
