A Solar Evening at Club Soda

For 2025, multidisciplinary artist Soleil Launière chose to bring forward the solstice ceremony to June 11, and celebrate it in the company of musicians she loves. Let’s just say that the evening was a success.

It began with traditional native drums, then gave way to keyboards and electric guitars. Soleil Launière took to the stage with the kind of traditional panache that has become her trademark. And it all kicked off with tracks from her 2023 album Taueu, an increasingly refined blend of tradition and the musical present.

Then began the well-crafted parade of female songwriters from different backgrounds: Berber Moroccan Nukad, Klo Pelgag, Cree Arachnid, Wendat Eadsé, Jorane and her cello, Dominique Fils-Aimée and the duo VioleTT Pi, the only male presence in this very feminine-feminist show. And that’s just as well.

All this was generally of a fairly high calibre. But the best moments came when the artists dialogued with Soleil Launière. I’m thinking in particular of Nukad, whose Maghrebian tradition blends perfectly with that of the Aboriginals, Jorane, very inspired and tapping furiously on her cello to play First Nations percussionist. And what can we say about Dominique Fils-Aimé, who, after a vocal solo that sent shivers down Club Soda’s spine, harmonized with Soleil Launière and the voices of accompanists Chloé Lacasse and Geneviève Toupin. It was pure vocal bliss.

It’s worth noting: the work of the accompanying band cemented this eclectic concert in a wonderful way. In addition to guitarist Simon Walls, there was the group Chances: Vincent Carré on drums, Chloé Lacasse on vocals and keyboard and Geneviève Toupin, aka Willows, on vocals, keyboards and guitars. What voices these women have!

There was another anonymous star: a one-year-old baby, who clapped his hands constantly and squealed with delight at the end of the first few songs.

It was a wonderful evening! As proof, my friend Gilles, a Belgian-born political scientist now living in India, who accompanied us yesterday and didn’t know any of the artists, came away completely enchanted by the event.

What more to say….Other than: Vive le métissage and the new wave of Indigenous music!

Francos | GreenWoodz, The Aura of a Rockstar

Despite a change of direction towards a more folksy, laid-back sound on his most recent album, GreenWoodz had promised a “wicked party” for his launch party. The promise was kept: the rapper set Studio TD alight with his new songs, not forgetting his classics.

The Mandeville native was charismatic from the outset. Sporting a leather jacket and jeans, GreenWoodz has the aura of a rockstar. And when you say rockstar, you say crowd-pleaser: from start to finish, the audience in front of the stage was singing along to every one of his songs, word for word.

The evidence is striking: he maintains a special connection with those who listen to him. The launch quickly takes on the air of a great evening with friends. Throughout the party, he engaged in countless exchanges with those present, even going so far as to descend into the room on two occasions – notably for the excellent Lucifer, from his new opus.

Alongside him were a drummer, a guitarist alternating between electric and acoustic, and Cook Da Beatz, DJ and long-time accomplice. It’s on stage that the emo-rap influence that runs through his discography is fully revealed. Melancholy, love and sadness are the order of the day.

Halfway through the set, GreenWoodz approaches the audience and sits down on a small stool. He is about to perform Tommy, a poignant tribute to a friend who left too soon. Illuminated by telephone flashlights, the 7ième Ciel rapper delivers this track masterfully, bringing to life one of the most moving moments of the evening.

Fans at Studio TD were also treated to four special guests. Shreez, Rymz, Souldia and Aswell all took to the stage to perform their respective collaborations. The latter’s appearance for their track IDGAF confirmed that local hip-hop is in very good hands with these two men.

GreenWoodz delivered a generous, vibrant and flawless show. A launch in the image of its evolution.

Francos de Montréal : Sensei H à la scène Desjardins

De nationalité franco-algérienne établie à Québec depuis plusieurs années, Sensei H pratique un rap français qui s’attache à l’importance du propos avec lequel elle décroche la deuxième position au concours des Francouvertes 2024. La même année, est sollicitée pour composer le jingle de la campagne de promotion de Télé-Québec à partir de sa chanson Hors du commun. La rappeuse est grandement influencée par une époque précise du rap français (entre 2006 et 2012) qu’elle découvre avec l’album Trait pour trait de Sniper. Cet album lui fera comprendre qu’il existe des manières de prendre position dans la société et que tout le monde peut le faire, d’une façon ou d’une autre. Pour elle, ça sera avec l’écriture.
En 2022, la rappeuse et son acolyte musicienne et beatmaker Vérone offrent l’album Trop de chance qui signe le début d’une grande histoire et qu’elles défendent sur scène notamment pour assurer les premières parties de plusieurs artistes comme Alaclair Ensemble, Black M, Souldia mais aussi lors des Franco de Montréal, le Festival d’été de Québec ou encore Le Festif!. Ayant pour principale préoccupation la maîtrise de la plume, l’artiste donne des ateliers d’écriture lors d’occasions particulières comme le Festif à l’école. Son nouvel album du nom de « La mort du troisième couplet » est disponible dès aujourd’hui.

Of Franco-Algerian descent and based in Quebec City for several years, Sensei H performs French rap with a strong focus on lyrical content—an approach that earned her second place at the 2024 Francouvertes competition. That same year, she was invited to create the jingle for Télé-Québec’s promotional campaign, using her song Hors du commun. The rapper draws heavy inspiration from a specific era of French rap (2006–2012), which she discovered through Sniper’s album Trait pour trait. That record made her realize there were ways to take a stand in society—and that anyone could do it, one way or another. For her, it would be through writing.
In 2022, she and her musical partner, beatmaker Vérone, released the album Trop de chance, which marked the beginning of a significant chapter. They’ve since brought it to the stage, opening for acts like Alaclair Ensemble, Black M, and Souldia, and performing at major events such as Les Francos de Montréal, the Festival d’été de Québec, and Le Festif!. With a deep commitment to the craft of writing, the artist also leads creative workshops on special occasions, such as the Festif! at School initiative. Her new album, La mort du troisième couplet, is out today.

Au sommet de la chaîne alimentaire du rap québécois, tout comme son acolyte White-B ou son groupe 5Sang14, Lost est dans une classe à part dans le créneau. Possédant une impressionnante feuille de route composée de plusieurs projets à grande portée, des dizaines de millions de visionnements sur YouTube et d’écoutes en continu, Lost est l’un des principaux acteurs du rap du 514. Son talent de parolier n’a d’égal que son talent sur scène. Possédant un talent inné pour faire bouger et chanter les foules, le rappeur originaire du Cameroun est l’un des plus grands performers scéniques du rap montréalais.

At the top of the Quebec rap food chain, alongside his partner White-B and his group 5Sang14, Lost stands in a class of his own within the scene. With an impressive track record including several high-profile projects, tens of millions of views on YouTube, and streams, Lost is one of the key figures in Montreal’s 514 rap scene. His skill as a lyricist is matched only by his talent on stage. With an innate ability to make crowds move and sing along, the rapper, originally from Cameroon, is one of the greatest stage performers in Montreal rap.

Un désir d’aller à l’opposé de la dernière tournée de Karkwa, de s’éloigner du bruit et de retrouver l’essence du musicien que je suis et de ses créations. Évidemment, je replongerai dans le répertoire de ma carrière solo mais j’irai aussi fouiller dans les bacs, dans les souvenirs de jeunesse pour réinventer plusieurs chansons d’autres artistes. Quand je suis seul sur scène, il y a une connexion profonde qui se crée avec vous. C’est une symbiose qui n’a pas d’égal…
Et ça me manquait.

This new show is a return to our roots. A desire to go in the opposite direction from Karkwa’s last tour, to get away from the noise and rediscover the essence of the musician I am and his creations. Obviously, I’ll be delving back into the repertoire of my solo career, but I’ll also be delving into the bins and memories of my youth to reinvent a number of songs by other artists. When I’m alone on stage, there’s a deep connection with you. It’s a symbiosis that has no equal… And I missed that.

Groupe de sept musiciens formé dans les couloirs du cégep Saint-Laurent, O.G.B (pour Original Gros Bonnet) marie le jazz au hip-hop en passant par la salsa et le rock. Nommant comme influences hip-hop Kaytranada, Brockhampton, Terrace Martin et Loud, le groupe souhaite « se détacher de la production de pièces courtes faites pour la consommation rapide ». Malgré une formation en jazz, « l’idée maîtresse est de toucher au hip-hop », tout en alliant l’électronique à l’organique.

O.G.B (short for Original Gros Bonnet) is a seven-piece band born in the hallways of Cégep Saint-Laurent. Blending jazz with hip-hop, salsa, and rock, the group defies genre boundaries with a vibrant and eclectic sound. Drawing inspiration from artists like Kaytranada, Brockhampton, Terrace Martin, and Loud, O.G.B aims to move away from the fast-consumption model of short-format songs. Despite their jazz training, their core focus remains rooted in hip-hop, with an emphasis on merging electronic elements with organic instrumentation.

Francos de Montréal : Connaisseur Ticaso à la scène Spotify

Connaisseur Ticaso est un rappeur auteur-interprète originaire de Montréal-Nord. Vers la fin des années 1990, il s’impose comme un sérieux aspirants au trône du rap montréalais. Après plusieurs projets “street” Connaisseur Ticaso ne mettra jamais au monde son album Original Chilleur prévu pour l’automne 2008.
Connaisseur fera finalement paraître “Normal de l’Est”,son premier opus officiel, le 1er janvier 2021. L’album sera grandement louangé par les fans, acclamé par la critique et célébré par l’industrie musicale qui soulignera l’excellence de l’album en lui accordant le Félix dans la catégorie album Rap de l’année au Gala de l’ADISQ 2021.
En 2024, il prépare un retour aux sources avec un deuxième album intitulé Rap Life sous l’étiquette de Rap Joy Ride Records.

Connaisseur Ticaso is a rapper and songwriter from Montréal-Nord who emerged in the late 1990s as one of the most promising contenders for the throne of Montreal rap. After releasing several influential “street” projects, his long-awaited album Original Chilleur, initially slated for fall 2008, never saw the light of day.
It wasn’t until January 1, 2021, that Connaisseur finally dropped his first official album, Normal de l’Est. The record was widely praised by fans, critically acclaimed, and recognized by the music industry, earning him the Félix award for Rap Album of the Year at the 2021 ADISQ Gala.
In 2024, he returns to his roots with a new project titled Rap Life, set for release under the Rap Joy Ride Records label.
