Le vivier en coulisse : Andrew Gray

Vous aimez la musique ? Vous appréciez divers genres musicaux ? Vous êtes curieux et ouvert.e.s à découvrir les musiques de création ? Vous souhaitez décrire la musique avec des mots, voire des symboles qui représentent votre expérience?

C’est parfait, nous avons un beau projet à vous proposer !
Le Vivier vous concocte des rencontres avec trois compositeurs réputés qui vous offriront des outils pour mieux les comprendre, les apprécier et les expliquer. Inspirées de la théorie de la sonologie auditive créée par le compositeur norvégien Lasse Thoresen, ces rencontres seront également liées à des concerts captés de la programmation du Vivier tout au long de la saison d’hiver 2022. Vous aurez ainsi la chance de rencontrer des artistes de la programmation du Vivier dont certaines pièces au programme seront présentées par les animateurs, en plus de visiter les coulisses. Une belle occasion de découvrir les créatrices et créateurs des musiques nouvelles d’ici et d’ailleurs, tout en développant des pistes d’écoute pour les apprécier.

Pour cette onzième édition du Vivier en coulisse, Dominique Lafortune s’entretiendra avec le chef de choeur de Voces Boreales Andrew Gray en lien avec le concert VIGILES – La splendeur de la musique chorale slave du passé et du présent présenté le 20 avril prochain dans la programmation du Vivier.

Des extraits de certaines pièces prévues au programme feront ensuite l’objet d’une écoute attentive inspirée de la sonologie auditive. Une belle occasion d’être en coulisse et de découvrir les dessous de ce concert. Bienvenue !

Formed in 2019, Forester is a new indie electronic duo that has already made a lasting impact in the scene. The Los Angeles-based group is comprised of Xander Carlson and David Parris, both of whom write, produce and sing. Their music blends acoustic instrumentation with electronic elements that transport the listener to wide-open spaces, allowing for introspection as well as the desire to dance. In May 2020, they landed a major label deal with Palm Tree Records, a Sony Music joint venture co-founded by Kygo. With millions of streams already under their belt and an ethos that calls for an eyes-closed escape, Forester’s future is looking brighter than ever..

Brooklyn-based synth auteurs Nation of Language entered 2020 as one of the most heralded new acts of recent memory, having only released a handful of singles but already earning high praise from the likes of NME, FADER, Stereogum, Pitchfork, etc.. Now in 2021, they continue to turn heads having released one of the most critically acclaimed debut albums of last year ‘ Introduction, Presence’ ) and recent breakout single ‘A Different Kind of Life’. The band’s ability to blend the upbeat with a healthy dose of sardonic melancholy made it a staple on year-end ‘Best of 2020’ lists, led PASTE magazine to dub the album ‘The most exciting synth-pop debut in years’, and landed the band major radio play from The BBC, KCRW, KEXP, SiriusXM and countless others. Inspired by the early new-wave and punk movements, the band quickly earned a reputation for delivering frenzied nights of unconventional bliss to rapt audiences and established themselves as bright young stars emerging from a crowded NYC landscape.

Geese is a band that begins and ends in Brooklyn, as a project between friends to build a home studio out of a basement. Their songs are born from the same ambition: to make music by any means necessary. They began recording together with sneakers as mic stands and blankets draped over the amps, all within the afternoon following a school day, up until they ran the risk of noise complaints. As of their recent signing with Partisan Records, they are thinking about moving on from sneaker-laden mics and blanketed amps, but their musical ethos has not changed a bit. Curiously alien, yet strangely familiar, the band’s new material is a product of five teenagers whose love of music touches every part of their lives: their restless anxiety about their futures, and their pent-up frustration with their present-a perspective all too familiar in today’s uncertain world.

Phonèmes : Music from François Dompierre – Webcast

Between the pandemic and the war drums, this project brings calm amidst the chaos. To take the dictionary definition, Phonemes are “perceptually distinct units of sound in language.” In parallel, contemplative music, a whisper of a melody; this is what the word evokes for François Dompierre. Indeed, this would seem an apt reflection of the character of the pieces included in this unique set: Maxime, Céleste, Partance, Septembre, Méandre, Cortège and Augustine. Seven contemplative pieces composed by François Dompierre, mostly unpublished, and inspired by the cinematic imagery with which he has crossed paths.

Projection du film Nosferatu le vampire, qui fête ses 100 ans, avec musique d’accompagnement

À l’occasion de la visite du quintet italien L’arsenale Ensemble, l’effrayant comte Orlok sortira de son cercueil au son de la musique de Filippo Perocco.

Les cinq membres de L’arsenale Ensemble, sous la direction de Filippo Perocco, proposent une relecture du chef-d’œuvre du cinéma expressionniste allemand de 1922. Plutôt que de décrire ou de commenter, la musique sert ici à nourrir une représentation imaginaire des personnages. Les éléments musicaux, parfois empruntés à la musique populaire, sont répétés sans toutefois rester prisonniers d’un quelconque leitmotiv. Un voyage onirique au pays du Nosferatu.

Screening of the film Nosferatu le vampire which celebrates its 100th anniversary with accompanying music.

On the occasion of the visit of the Italian quintet L’arsenale Ensemble, the frightening Count Orlok will emerge from his coffin to the sound of Filippo Perocco’s music in the classic film by German director Wilhelm Murnau.

The five members of L’arsenale Ensemble, under the direction of Filippo Perocco, propose a re-reading of the 1922 masterpiece of German expressionist cinema. Rather than describing or commenting, the music serves here to nourish an imaginary representation of the characters. The musical elements, sometimes borrowed from popular music, are repeated without remaining prisoners of any leitmotiv. A dreamlike journey to the land of Nosferatu.
