The celebrations commemorating the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth continue, this time with the conclusion of the complete Sonatas for Violin and Pianoas presented by Andrew Wan, MSO concertmaster, and pianist Charles Richard-Hamelin. The pièce de résistance of this program, the imposing Kreutzer Sonata (named after and dedicated to the French violinist Rodolphe Kreutzer), a veritable monument to romanticism at its most exacerbated with its exalted outbursts, was composed at the same period as the Symphony No. 3, known as the Eroica.

(CANCELLED) Cheng2 Duo

Although they are still very young, the Cheng siblings have been making music as a duo for more than 15 years. Their playing has a very special telepathic quality, marked by a youthful freshness. The works on the program were chosen based on the exhibition Paris in the Days of Post-Impressionism – Signac and the Indépendants, presented at the MMFA. The concert is preceded by a guided tour at 5 p.m., after the Museum’s opening hours.

Presented on the occasion of the traditional New Year’s Day of the Persian calendar, In the Shadow of Mount Damascus (the highest semi-active volcanic peak in Iran) is inspired by the Shânâmeh, or Book of Kings, an epic poem retracing the history of Iran, from the creation of the world to the arrival of Islam, by the Iranian poet Ferdowsi. The concert will be accompanied by the projection on a large screen of an animated film directed by Aristofanis Soulikias.

Bande Montréal Baroque

One of Arte Musica’s major projects is to present the complete sacred cantatas by Johann Sebastian Bach, following the liturgical cycle. The next two will be performed by la Bande Montréal Baroque, under the direction of German cellist and conductor Olaf Reimers. Four soloists will be featured: soprano Ariadne Lih, countertenor Matthew Muggeridge, tenor Philippe Gagné and baritone Clayton Kennedy.

Two years ago, I Musici de Montréal invited the Latvian-born Israeli violinist Vadim Gluzman to perform Peteris Vasks’ Distant Light. Fabulous! To the delight of music lovers, Gluzman is back with the Montreal ensemble under the direction of Jean-Marie Zeitouni. This time, the virtuoso goes to work on Beethoven’s Violin Concerto, accompanied for the occasion by cadenzas by composer Alfred Schnittke. Schnittke’s Concerto grosso sees an exchange between two violins, so Gluzman will dialogue with Julie Triquet, concertmaster of I Musici. At the opening of the concert, I Musici will supplement its core team for the performance of Prokofiev’s Classical Symphony.

The 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth is the occasion for so many special programs around the world. Arte Musica offers us a superb selection of Beethoven, including the following series of chamber music concerts. The first program of this series offers us two trios. The first is the trio of three French virtuosos, violinist David Grimal, cellist Anne Gastinel and pianist Philippe Cassard, and the second is the Montreal trio of violinist Axel Strauss, violist Douglas McNabney and cellist Matt Haimovitz. Two trios and a quartet on the program, adding up to an intersection of perspectives. The two trios will also share the same stage on March 14, for another program.

La Nef

This programme sheds particular light on the nyckelharpa, a traditional Swedish instrument through which one can discover the kinship between Irish and Swedish traditional music, as well as the music of the Baroque period. Original arrangements of works by the Irish composer Turlough O’Carolan (1670-1738) and traditional Swedish music will be performed. La Nef’s approach, which has been in play since the 1990s, is based on the blending of cultures, styles and periods. It draws its inspiration from early, antique and oral-tradition music, but it also makes room for more recent or downright contemporary music.
