Ce n’est pas un hasard si la musique de Bolis Pupul sonne ainsi. Né en Belgique d’une mère chinoise et d’un père belge, et élevé dans la ville créative et branchée de Gand, la musique de Bolis est un joyeux mélange interculturel. Mêlant l’électronique grand écran – pensez à la techno des débuts de Mr Fingers et au minimalisme homme-machine exubérant de Yellow Magic Orchestra – à la naïveté chaleureuse et décalée du New Beat belge, la sonorité singulière de Bolis est à la fois ludique, émotive, implacable et tendre.
La véritable clé pour percer le secret musical de Bolis réside dans ce dialogue entre ses racines orientales et occidentales. C’est une notion qu’il a inconsciemment abordée sur ses deux premières sorties pour le label DEEWEE de David et Stephen Dewaele (Soulwax/2manydjs).

It’s no coincidence that Bolis Pupul’s music sounds the way it does. Born in Belgium to a Chinese mother and Belgian father and raised in the super-cool creative city of Ghent, Bolis’ music is a joyous cross-cultural assemblage. Mixing widescreen electronica – think early Mr Fingers-like techno and Yellow Magic Orchestra’s exuberant man-machine minimalism – with the warm-hearted and wonky naivete of Belgian New Beat, Bolis’ singular sonics are at once playful, emotive, unrelenting and tender.
The real key to unlocking Bolis’ musical secret, however, is that conversation he has between his Eastern and Western roots. It was something he subconsciously touched upon on his first two releases for David and Stephen Dewaele (Soulwax/2manydjs)’s DEEWEE label.

POP Montréal : Chanel Beads + Jules Reidy + Una Rose au Rialto Hall

Chanel Beads, le projet du musicien new-yorkais Shane Lavers, annonce son premier album, Your Day Will Come, et dévoile le premier single/clip, « Idea June ». Your Day Will Come marque l’arrivée de Lavers comme une nouvelle figure de la musique expérimentale. Tout au long de l’album, Lavers capture les multiples contradictions de l’existence moderne et l’étrange infinité du monde numérique. S’il intègre les sonorités décousues du post-punk, la sentimentalité poignante des morceaux pop et l’artifice spectral de la musique électronique, il brouille les pistes à travers des structures musicales non conventionnelles qui mènent à des climax transcendants. En imprimant intentionnellement ses chansons pour y intégrer des artefacts grillés et des restes fantomatiques, les morceaux qui en résultent ont une dimension temporelle, à la fois transitoire et intemporelle.
Lavers a commencé à écrire Your Day Will Come lors d’une période de réflexion en novembre 2022. Coincé en quarantaine dans son appartement de Brooklyn, il a ressenti le besoin de puiser au cœur de sa véritable identité, au-delà des modes passagères et des moments culturels récurrents. Ainsi, pendant cette étrange période entre les vacances d’hiver, il a commencé à écrire des chansons qui luttaient contre la perte qui l’avait traversé, fondatrices de sa vision de lui-même et de ses relations avec les autres. Nombre des paroles qui lui sont restées répondaient à des conflits internes et externes. Des mots qu’il devait prononcer à voix haute pour révéler la réalité de la situation. Tout au long de l’album, Lavers intègre les contributions de McGrory et du violoniste expérimental Zachary Paul, qui apportent leurs propres nuances émotionnelles qui ajoutent à la profonde émotion de l’album. Habitué à jouer dans divers groupes lorsqu’il vivait à Seattle, Shane a commencé à tout dépouiller lorsqu’il a commencé à donner des concerts à New York, cherchant à trouver ce qui lui semblait digne d’être interprété. Cet état d’esprit a guidé l’écriture du disque, où Lavers s’est efforcé de ne retenir que ce qui lui semblait le plus nécessaire. « Il y avait un filtre sur ce disque », explique Lavers. « Si je ne le ressentais pas en le jouant, je ne pouvais pas en faire une chanson. Autant je voulais créer quelque chose de frais au toucher, autant je devais créer quelque chose qui me fasse ressentir quelque chose. »

Chanel Beads — the project of New York-based musician Shane Lavers — announces his debut album, Your Day Will Come, and shares the lead single/video, “Idea June.” Your Day Will Come marks Lavers’ arrival as a new force in experimental music. Throughout the album, Lavers captures the many contradictions of modern existence and the strange infiniteness of the digital world. Though he incorporates the scrappy sonics of post-punk, the gripping sentimentality of pop tunes, and the spectral artifice of electronic music, he blurs lines through unconventional song structures that build into transcendental climaxes. As he intentionally prints his songs down to embed fried artifacts and ghostly remains, the resulting songs have a time-collapsing quality, both transitory and timeless.
Following previous single “Police Scanner,” “Idea June” features live bandmate Maya McGrory taking lead vocals to project Lavers’ lyrics. As McGrory sings in a voice that’s both earnest and digitally processed, it’s as though she’s speaking as a separate embodiment of Lavers. In under two minutes, the track of clunky acoustic guitar and gutting strings lands somewhere between detachment and kinship. The track becomes strangely affecting in its unfinished and liminal form, and Lavers, who is drawn to poor MP3 rips and transitional moments in DJ mixes, knows that these inexact musical artifacts evoke human imperfection. Lavers first started writing Your Day Will Come during a period of reflection in November 2022. Stuck quarantining in his Brooklyn apartment, he found himself wanting to dig down into the core of who he truly was, apart from fleeting trends or rebounding cultural moments. So during that strange time between winter holidays, he started to write songs that wrestled with loss that rippled through his life, foundational to the way he sees himself and the way he relates to others. Many of the lyrics that remained were in response to both internal and external conflicts. They were words that he had to speak aloud to uncover the reality of the situation. Throughout, Lavers weaves in contributions from McGrory and experimental violinist Zachary Paul, who offer their own layers of feeling that add to the huge emotionality of the album. Accustomed to performing in various bands when he lived in Seattle, Shane began to strip everything back when he started playing shows around New York, working to locate what felt worthy for him to perform. That mindset informed the writing of the record, in which Lavers forced himself to only keep what felt the most necessary to say. “There was a filter to this record,” Lavers says. “If it didn’t move me while performing, then I couldn’t make it into a song. As much as I wanted to make something that was cool to the touch, I had to make something that made me feel something.”

Jules Reidy’s sublime music maps the human experience in glittering constellations of sound. The guitarist is a driver of Berlin’s fertile contemporary music scene, a respected polymath whose prolific output and worldwide touring has led to performances and collaborations with myriad lauded artists. Reidy’s breathtaking recordings and magnetic performances offer a truly futuristic, singular vision of guitar music. Explorations of microtonal mysticism and alternate tunings drawn from transcendental folk and minimalism color Reidy’s playful experiments with smudged pop melodics and sampling. A wide-eyed imagination combined with technical mastery guide each work in Reidy’s extensive catalog, from solo guitar albums and collaborations with innovative peers, including recent works with claire rousay, Oren Ambarchi, Andrea Belfi and Sam Dunscombe to major commissions from institutions such as JACK Quartet and Zinc & Copper. Una Rose

Una Rose est le projet solo de Rosie Long Decter (Bodywash). Long Decter troque les murs de son de Bodywash contre des synthés délicats, une voix cristalline et un lyrisme habile, abordant l’écriture de chansons avec une curiosité ironique. Ses arrangements superposés relient le réalisme folk terre-à-terre à des atmosphères éphémères qui vont au-delà. Una Rose is the solo project of Rosie Long Decter (Bodywash). Né à Maputo et établi à Montréal, Samito est un musicien dont l’œuvre en évolution reflète une adhésion ferme aux sons et aux dialogues contemporains. Initialement ancré dans le jazz, son travail est d’abord venu à l’attention du public avec la sortie de “Tiku La Hina”, le propulsant sur les scènes mondiales lors d’événements prestigieux tels que MUTEK, Osheaga, Reeperbahn, POP Montréal et SXSW. Cependant, après trois ans à bâtir son élan dans la scène musicale compétitive de Montréal, Samito a fait le choix audacieux, potentiellement contraire aux opinions des autres, de faire une pause dans sa carrière, en transition vers la création de FEZIHAUS™, une entreprise décrite comme un “atelier inspiré par les labels” ou un “effort civique”. His latest project, ‘Des-Dobramento (Unfolding): Shame Cycle,’ comprises a 4-part song cycle that represents a deeply personal journey of reflection and reconciliation with his musical roots. Seeking to bridge a creative divide, Samito explores the classical music song cycle form, juxtaposed with jazz harmony structures with lyrical themes, delving into complex emotions, particularly regarding shame. Ben Vallée, chanteur et compositeur de musique country, se spécialise dans l’interprétation de chansons mélancoliques accompagnées de pedal steel. Son premier album, “Introducing…”, produit par Andy McClelland sous le pseudonyme de L’il Andy, a été lancé à l’été 2024. À travers son style distinctif de country et western, ses chansons captivent les nuances les plus profondes de la vie.

Singer-songwriter/pedal steel guitarist Ben Vallee has been a part of Montreal’s quaint underground roots music scene for nearly a decade. His earnest and honest songwriting spells life and its heartaches beneath the blanket of traditional country and western music. His debut record “Introducing” was released summer of 2024, produced by Montreal Country Music authority Li’l Andy.

Big Share est un duo guitare-voix de Tiohtià:ke/Montréal, fondé par Chesley Walsh et Luke Fowlie. Leurs paroles et leurs harmonies vocales uniques, combinées à des entrelacements de guitares hypnotiques, créent des chansons pop folk dynamiques et introspectives. Leur premier album est sorti en 2020 et leur prochain album, Printed Pictures, sortira fin septembre. Leur dernier album, écrit et enregistré pendant une grossesse à haut risque, explore la quête d’espoir à travers le deuil.

Big Share is a guitar & vox duo in Tiohtià:ke/ Montreal, started by Chesley Walsh & Luke Fowlie. Their lyrics and unique vocal harmonies, combined with hypnotic interlocking guitars, create dynamic and introspective folk pop songs. Their debut album was released in 2020 and their forthcoming release “Printed Pictures” comes out late September. Their newest record was written and recorded while navigating a high risk pregnancy and explores themes of maintaining hope through grief.
