With a fourth album in the works, transcendence, the sublime, and letting go are on Portielje’s mind. Since Half Moon Run’s last album, A Blemish in the Great Light (Glassnote, 2019), there’s been a global pandemic and a sea-change in the live music industry. Meanwhile, the band’s put out three releases—two EPs and a collection of reworked “isolation versions” of older songs. Plus, their fourth member, multi-instrumentalist Isaac Symonds, has moved on to a bucolic life out west.

The remaining trio—Portielje, Conner Molander, and Dylan Phillips—are also the band’s founding trio. Their fabled origin story involves a 2009 Craigslist ad, and a dingy Mile End jam space populated by a rising wave of Montreal musicians, including phenom Grimes. They spent those formative years generating not just their debut album, Dark Eyes (Indica, 2012) but also the restless, six-armed entity that composes their music and performs their live show. (All of Half Moon Run’s members, past and present, are vocalists and multi-instrumentalists.) “The chemistry just fused,” Molander says of that time. “We decided that we were going to drop everything else that we might want to pursue in our lives and just go full steam ahead with the band. I dropped out of university, we all quit jobs, took on debt. When I think back on that album, it must’ve been by sheer force of desperation that something came across, because there was no turning back.”

Reste Portielje, Conner Molander et Dylan Phillips, le trio fondateur du groupe. Leur historique comprend une annonce Craigslist en 2009 et un espace de pratique sombre du Mile End, peuplé d’une vague montante de musiciens montréalais, y compris la phénomène Grimes. Ils ont passé ces années formatives à générer non seulement un premier album, Dark Eyes (Indica, 2012), mais aussi l’entité agitée à six bras qui compose leur musique et assure leur spectacle en direct. (Tous les membres de Half Moon Run, passés et présents, sont des vocalistes et des multi-instrumentalistes.) « La chimie a simplement fonctionné », dit Molander de cette époque. « Nous avons décidé de laisser tomber tous nos projets de vies et d’y aller à fond avec le groupe. J’ai abandonné l’université, nous avons tous quitté nos emplois et accumulé des dettes. Lorsque je repense à cet album, c’est sûrement dû à la force du désespoir que quelque chose est apparu, car il n’y avait pas de retour possible en arrière. »

A powerful spark plug! That’s the perfect way to describe Sara Dufour. The brilliant singer-songwriter from Dolbeau Mistassini already has an EP and 3 albums to her credit. Since the release of her eponymous album in 2019, she has been touring Quebec and France, piling up the honors (ADISQ and GAMIQ nominations, SOCAN Song of the Year, SPACQ André ‘Dédé’ Fortin Award and SOCAN Country Music Award). She has played over 400 shows to a growing and enthusiastic audience, including a performance on the Plains of Abraham during a historic evening with Les Cowboys Fringants at the Festival d’été de Québec in 2023.  

At her shows, she’s an authentic person who makes you want to escape for a while, or at least breathe in freedom for a while. At the wheel of her guitar, she continues to “tap her trail” with her folk’n’roll. She tells you “bits” of steamy stories and draws you into her adventures, sprinkled with humor and spontaneity, firmly rooted in her roots.

After getting into rap at age nine and trading freestyle insults with friends while playing Xbox, Queens rapper Lil Tecca developed an Auto-Tuned flow that looked to Chief Keef as a primary influence. He released a few tracks online in 2018 and broke through to a wider audience with “Did It Again” and the standout charting single “Ransom,” which also appeared on his 2019 mixtape We Love You Tecca. That mixtape, his 2020 debut studio album, Virgo World, and its 2021 follow-up, We Love You Tecca 2, all cracked the Top Ten of the Billboard charts. Tecca’s third studio album, Tec, arrived in 2023 and also performed well in the charts.

Après s’être lancé dans le rap à l’âge de neuf ans et avoir échangé des insultes freestyle avec ses amis en jouant à la Xbox, le rappeur du Queens Lil Tecca a développé un flow Auto-Tuned qui s’est tourné vers Chief Keef comme influence principale. Patrick Watson is a Canadian rock band formed in 2000 by the multi-instrumentalist of the same name, born in 1979. The band’s success continued to grow, culminating in the album Close to Paradise (2006), which includes the hit “Drifters”. In 2009, the band changed its name to Patrick Watson & the Wooden Arms for the album of the same name. As time went on, the band’s releases enjoyed wider distribution after numerous synchronizations for advertising and film. The band’s fifth production, Adventures in Your Own Backyard, was released in 2012, followed three years later by Love Songs for Robots.

DYSTINCT was born in Antwerp in 1998 under the name Iliass Mansouri. His father was a singer and, as a child, DYSTINCT often accompanied him to his shows. His passion for music grew, but the singer found it difficult to speak freely about his ambitions, as his parents did not agree with his career choice. Nevertheless, DYSTINCT’s progressive personality meant that, at the age of 14, he continued to develop his musical talents professionally. This hard work soon paid off, with his debut single “No Ring Ring” boasting over 3 million views on YouTube and over 4 million streams on Spotify. His sound is described as a mix of urban and Arabic elements. He has already worked with names such as Chawki (Morocco), Franglish (France), F1rstman (Netherlands), DJ Leska (France), Zefanio (Netherlands) and many others. DYSTINCT is currently working on his debut album “Mon Voyage”, due for release soon.

Their second album, Aggressive, was released on June 3, 2016, their third album Disease on September 28, 2018, and their fourth album Below on June 25, 2021.

Gab Bouchard at MTELUS

Music: being born into it is one thing; making a life out of it is what we’re talking about. An engaging, detached young man from Saint-Prime, Gab Bouchard independently launched the country-rock EP with pop touches Cerveau-lent in 2017. Spurred on by the local buzz, he then headed to Montreal to recreate the buzz in the metropolis, preceded by his trademark moustache.

The first popular milestone, the fruit of hard work and heartbreak, his album Triste pareil was released on the eve of the first confinement of 2020, allowing him to do launch shows only in Montreal and Quebec City. And although his first round of concerts was scuttled, he was able to get back on track with a batch of festival appearances in the summer of 2021, and began work on his second album, Grafignes, over two winters.

Released in August 2022, Grafignes reflects the progress made since the first album, taking more time and space. It’s a collection with themes that are both “lusher and heavier on the mind”, dealing with being pushed to the wall, introspection, old acquaintances and equally old stories, carried by country and 70s influences with big riffs and soaring choruses.

La musique : être né dedans, c’est une affaire; s’en faire une vie, c’est de ça dont on parle. Jeune homme attachant et détaché originaire de Saint-Prime, Gab Bouchard lance de façon indépendante l’EP country-rock aux touches pop Cerveau-lent en 2017. Éperonné par l’engouement local, il met ensuite le cap sur Montréal afin de recréer le buzz dans la métropole, précédé de sa caractéristique moustache.

Premier jalon populaire, fruit de travail intégral et de peine d’amour, son album Triste pareil paraît à l’orée du premier confinement de 2020, ne lui permettant de faire des spectacles de lancement qu’à Montréal et Québec. Et même si sa première ronde de concerts a été sabordée, il a pu se reprendre en grand avec un lot d’apparitions dans des festivals à l’été 2021, et entame sur deux hivers la création de son second album, Grafignes.

Paru en août 2022, Grafignes témoigne du chemin parcouru depuis le premier, prenant davantage son temps et son espace. Une collection aux thèmes à la fois « plus lousses et plus lourds sur le mental », traitant d’être acculé au pied du mur, d’introspection, de vieilles connaissances et d’aussi vieilles histoires, portée par des influences country et 70s aux gros riffs et aux chœurs planants.

The Alaska-born, Portland-based Portugal. The Man has carved out a unique niche on the pop landscape, balancing their artfully left of center, neo-psychedelic indie rock with hooky dance, R&B, hip-hop, and electronic traditions. Debuting in 2006, they delivered a series of independent albums throughout the late 2000s, touring hard and eventually signing a deal with Atlantic for 2010’s Billboard 200-charting In the Mountain in the Cold. The band’s diligence paid off during their major-label tenure, with each subsequent album gaining them a wider fan base and increased acclaim. On 2013’s Evil Friends, they forged a collaboration with producer Danger Mouse, who helped out on the group’s politically driven eighth album, 2017’s Woodstock, which yielded the Grammy-winning hit single “Feel It Still.” Following an extended hiatus, they returned in 2023 with Chris Black Changed My Life (which was dedicated to the group’s friend, filmmaker Chris Black, who died in 2019) and again found them blending psych-pop with R&B, dance, and hip-hop sounds.

Nés en Alaska et basés à Portland, les membres de Portugal.
