Whereas many of his Spanish-language contemporaries undertook English-language crossover campaigns at one point or another in their careers, Colombian singer/songwriter, guitarist, and author Juanes has won global appeal exclusively in his native language and became perhaps the biggest, most important popular Latin music artist of the early 21st century. After his debut album, Fíjate Bien (2000), won him the Latin Grammy for Best New Artist (the first of more than two dozen including over 20 Latin Grammy Awards and four Grammys), Juanes broke through to global success with his second offering, Un Día Normal (2002). In the United States alone, the album rode the Billboard Latin chart for two straight years, remaining in the Top Ten for a record-breaking 92 weeks; it also notched six charting singles and six Latin Grammy Awards. When he returned with his third album, Mi Sangre (2004), Juanes again garnered commercial success and critical acclaim. He toured tirelessly, and by 2005 he began topping singles charts in non-Spanish-speaking countries.

With a spaced-out, subdued flow that sometimes sits at the edge of mumble rap, Chicago rapper Lucki sets himself apart from the herd with inventive production choices and exceptionally vulnerable lyrical narratives. The charismatic young talent has addressed troubles with addiction and mental health in his songs, and collaborated with artists like Danny Brown and FKA Twigs. Grammy- and Oscar-winning keyboardist, singer, and composer, Jon Batiste is an ebullient and highly eclectic performer with a sound that combines the jazz traditions of his New Orleans home with a vibrant blend of funk, pop, and R&B. From 2015 to 2022, Batiste was the bandleader and musical director for CBS’ The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. He has toured the globe with his own Stay Human ensemble and issued releases like 2013’s chart-topping jazz album Social Music. A member of the esteemed Batiste musical family, he emerged in his teens as a gifted jazz pianist with a strong grasp of the Crescent City jazz and R&B sound. Batiste has busked on street corners, held music clinics worldwide, and managed to draw multitudes to his wide-open, accessible brand of rhythmic swing on virtually any keyboard instrument he chooses, in any genre. Though heralded as a brilliant pianist and organist, his use of the melodica — which has graced albums by artists ranging from Stevie Wonder and Harry Connick, Jr. to Trombone Shorty — has become a visible signature of his work. Batiste has earned accolades including Grammy nominations for his rootsy take on “Saint James Infirmary” off 2018’s expansive Hollywood Africans and for 2020’s Chronology of a Dream: Live at the Village Vanguard. He has also scored films, such as Spike Lee’s Red Hook Summer and 2020’s animated Pixar movie Soul, the latter of which won an Oscar for Best Original Score.

Half Moon Run at MTELUS

With a fourth album in the works, transcendence, the sublime, and letting go are on Portielje’s mind. Since Half Moon Run’s last album, A Blemish in the Great Light (Glassnote, 2019), there’s been a global pandemic and a sea-change in the live music industry. Meanwhile, the band’s put out three releases—two EPs and a collection of reworked “isolation versions” of older songs. Plus, their fourth member, multi-instrumentalist Isaac Symonds, has moved on to a bucolic life out west.

The remaining trio—Portielje, Conner Molander, and Dylan Phillips—are also the band’s founding trio. Their fabled origin story involves a 2009 Craigslist ad, and a dingy Mile End jam space populated by a rising wave of Montreal musicians, including phenom Grimes. They spent those formative years generating not just their debut album, Dark Eyes (Indica, 2012) but also the restless, six-armed entity that composes their music and performs their live show. (All of Half Moon Run’s members, past and present, are vocalists and multi-instrumentalists.) “The chemistry just fused,” Molander says of that time. “We decided that we were going to drop everything else that we might want to pursue in our lives and just go full steam ahead with the band. I dropped out of university, we all quit jobs, took on debt. When I think back on that album, it must’ve been by sheer force of desperation that something came across, because there was no turning back.”

Avec un quatrième album en préparation, la transcendance, le sublime et le lâcher-prise reflètent l’esprit de Portielje. A powerful spark plug! That’s the perfect way to describe Sara Dufour. The brilliant singer-songwriter from Dolbeau Mistassini already has an EP and 3 albums to her credit. Since the release of her eponymous album in 2019, she has been touring Quebec and France, piling up the honors (ADISQ and GAMIQ nominations, SOCAN Song of the Year, SPACQ André ‘Dédé’ Fortin Award and SOCAN Country Music Award). She has played over 400 shows to a growing and enthusiastic audience, including a performance on the Plains of Abraham during a historic evening with Les Cowboys Fringants at the Festival d’été de Québec in 2023.  

At her shows, she’s an authentic person who makes you want to escape for a while, or at least breathe in freedom for a while. At the wheel of her guitar, she continues to “tap her trail” with her folk’n’roll. She tells you “bits” of steamy stories and draws you into her adventures, sprinkled with humor and spontaneity, firmly rooted in her roots.

After getting into rap at age nine and trading freestyle insults with friends while playing Xbox, Queens rapper Lil Tecca developed an Auto-Tuned flow that looked to Chief Keef as a primary influence. He released a few tracks online in 2018 and broke through to a wider audience with “Did It Again” and the standout charting single “Ransom,” which also appeared on his 2019 mixtape We Love You Tecca. That mixtape, his 2020 debut studio album, Virgo World, and its 2021 follow-up, We Love You Tecca 2, all cracked the Top Ten of the Billboard charts. Tecca’s third studio album, Tec, arrived in 2023 and also performed well in the charts.

Patrick Watson is a Canadian rock band formed in 2000 by the multi-instrumentalist of the same name, born in 1979. The band’s success continued to grow, culminating in the album Close to Paradise (2006), which includes the hit “Drifters”. In 2009, the band changed its name to Patrick Watson & the Wooden Arms for the album of the same name. As time went on, the band’s releases enjoyed wider distribution after numerous synchronizations for advertising and film. The band’s fifth production, Adventures in Your Own Backyard, was released in 2012, followed three years later by Love Songs for Robots.

DYSTINCT was born in Antwerp in 1998 under the name Iliass Mansouri. His father was a singer and, as a child, DYSTINCT often accompanied him to his shows. His passion for music grew, but the singer found it difficult to speak freely about his ambitions, as his parents did not agree with his career choice. Nevertheless, DYSTINCT’s progressive personality meant that, at the age of 14, he continued to develop his musical talents professionally. This hard work soon paid off, with his debut single “No Ring Ring” boasting over 3 million views on YouTube and over 4 million streams on Spotify. His sound is described as a mix of urban and Arabic elements. He has already worked with names such as Chawki (Morocco), Franglish (France), F1rstman (Netherlands), DJ Leska (France), Zefanio (Netherlands) and many others. DYSTINCT is currently working on his debut album “Mon Voyage”, due for release soon.

Their second album, Aggressive, was released on June 3, 2016, their third album Disease on September 28, 2018, and their fourth album Below on June 25, 2021.
