M pour Montréal présente Kamikaze Nurse

by Rédaction PAN M 360

Kamikaze Nurse are a rock band formed in Vancouver in 2018 with KC Wei, Ethan Reyes, Sonya Eui, and John Brennan. Named after activist-philosopher Simone Weil’s unfulfilled humanitarian death wish, the band released their debut LP, Bucky Fleur in June 2019. Their music has been described as “ethereal skronk,” “Deleuzian rock,” and “best of the ‘90s”.
Kamikaze Nurse’s evocative integration of melody and noise, along with their interests in poetry, film, and literature, creates a narrative world in which the songs grow to have their own internal logic, reaching beyond genres and conventions.

Les Goules

by Patrick Baillargeon

A Goules show is never trivial and always very entertaining. But in spite of the band’s antics, there are still the songs. Keith Kouna and his troupe touch on punk and chanson with a very personal sensibility and approach, instead of falling into caricature and the many clichés inherent in both genres.

Organized by one of the founders of the Montreal psychedelic festival Distortion, this concert presents two emerging bands: Shade, a rock ‘n’ roll band from Hamilton, and Orchids, a local shoegaze band – a rare genre in Montreal. The latter has just joined the Belgian label EXAG’ Records and will present, among other things, its next two songs to be released as singles.

In the opening slot, Jyraph will replace the previously scheduled Chacal.

Toronto’s Gloin released their first EP Soft Monster last April. Since then, the band has notably opened for the mythical space-rock band Moon Duo. Hopefully, on the occasion of their second appearance in Montreal, they’ll have some new material in the same stoner rock and noise-rock vein. Gloin will soon be playing at the SXSW festival in Austin, and the New Colossus festival in New York, making them one of the emerging Toronto bands to watch out for this year. The concert takes place at L’Escogriffe with two local bands: Cantos and Jed Arbour.

White Cowbell Oklahoma • Floating Widget

by Patrick Baillargeon

Toronto’s exuberant White Cowbell Oklahoma are coming to celebrate their 20th anniversary in Montreal, a city they know well enough, having played there many times. While some assumed they’d vanished under a mountain of empty beer cans, the Ontario band has never really stopped playing wherever they’ve been in demand – in Canada, of course, but also in the Netherlands, France and Germany, where the WCO’s southern (northern) rock seems to be particularly popular. The sextet, known for their guitar excesses, offbeat humour and penchant for getting pickeld, will share the stage with local stoner combo Floating Widget.
