SlowPitchSound

SlowPitchSound est un compositeur primé, un mentor et un explorateur du son et de l’image basé à Toronto, avec plus de vingt ans d’expérience. Il a collaboré avec de brillant.e.s créateur.rice.s issu.e.s d’un large éventail de disciplines, dont l’opéra, le jazz, la musique classique, la musique électronique, le théâtre et la danse. Son style unique de production musicale, autoproclamé « scifi-turntablism », a été présenté sur les scènes du monde entier, notamment au Canada, en Australie, aux États-Unis, au Royaume-Uni, en France, en Suède, en Allemagne et à Taïwan. Passionné par la profondeur et le détail dans son travail, SlowPitchSound est fortement inspiré par la nature, l’espace et la science-fiction dystopique. Son approche de la création et de la présentation de la musique comprend le turntablism, le sampling en direct et le field recording.

SlowPitchSound is an award winning Toronto-based composer, mentor, and explorer of sound & visuals with over two decades of experience. He has collaborated with brilliant creators from a wide range of disciplines including opera, jazz, classical, electronic music, theatre and dance. His unique style of music production, self proclaimed as “scifi-turntablism”, has been featured on stages around the world including Canada, Australia, USA, United Kingdom, France, Sweden, Germany and Taiwan. With a passion for depth and detail in his work, SlowPitchSound is heavily inspired by nature, outer space, and dystopian sci-fi. His approach to making and presenting music includes turntablism, live sampling and field recordings.

Bana Haffar

Bana Haffar est une compositrice de musique électronique vivant à Montréal, au Canada. Elle travaille avec des motifs, du design sonore et du séquençage basé sur des échantillons, cherchant à relier les univers sonores et les motifs à divers systèmes non musicaux. En 2014, Bana a fondé, avec Eric Cheslak, Modular on the Spot à Los Angeles, et en 2021, elle a co-fondé le Beirut Synthesizer Center au Liban.

Bana Haffar is an electronic music composer living in Montreal, Canada. She works with patterns, sound design, and sample based sequencing, attempting to relate sound worlds and patterns to various non-musical systems. In 2014 Bana, together with Eric Cheslak, founded Modular on the Spot in Los Angeles and in 2021 she co-founded the Beirut Synthesizer Center in Lebanon.

Crachat is a glittery punk rock trio from Quebec City’s Lower Town. Formed in 2022, their music resonates with explosive, extravagant teenage anger. Their distortion-laden garage sound doesn’t stop the musicians from radiating femininity on stage: rock ‘n’ roll, tutus and vivacity are always on the agenda for these big-armed princesses.

Ribbon Skirt

Guidé par la musicienne Anishinaabe Tashiina Buswa, Ribbon Skirt est un groupe montréalais connu autrefois sous le nom de Love Language. Avec un spectacle captivant, ils ont participé à des festivals à travers le Canada et les États-Unis, incluant SXSW, New Colossus, Sled Island, Sappyfest, Flourish et Pop Montréal, et ont partagé la scène avec Dehd, Ombiigizi, Packs, Chad VanGaalen et Enumclaw. Leur premier album présente un son plus sombre et plus introspectif, abordant les thèmes de la mémoire, du deuil et de la connexion de Buswa à son identité autochtone et à ses pratiques culturelles. Produit par Scott ‘Monty’ Munro (Preoccupations) et Marlaena Moore, et avec beaucoup des expérimentations en studio, le groupe a émergé avec un premier album confiant, mélangeant boîtes à rythmes et synthétiseurs pour compléter l’énergie du groupe sur scène. Continuant à pousser leur son dans une nouvelle direction, le groupe a choisi de travailler avec le légendaire batteur et compositeur expérimental Greg Saunier (Deerhoof) pour le mixage, et l’album a été masterisé par Mikey Young (Total Control).

Led by Anishinaabe musician Tashiina Buswa, Ribbon Skirt are a band from Montreal, formerly known as Love Language. With a captivating live show, they have played festivals across Canada and the US including SXSW, New Colossus, Sled Island, Sappyfest, Flourish and Pop Montreal, and shared stages with Dehd, Ombiigizi, Packs, Chad VanGaalen and Enumclaw. Their debut album brings a darker and more introspective sound, dealing with themes of memory, grief and Buswa’s connection to her Indigenous identity and cultural practices. Produced by Scott ‘Monty’ Munro (Preoccupations) and Marlaena Moore, and with endless experimentation in the studio the band emerged with a confident debut album mixing drum machines and synths to compliment the energy of the live band. Continuing in this spirit of pushing their sound into a new direction, the band chose to work with legendary experimental drummer and composer Greg Saunier (Deerhoof) on mixing, and the album was mastered by Mikey Young (Total Control).

Suoni Per Il Popolo: Peter Zummo Quartet + Malcolm Goldstein + Guy Thouin & Aaron Leaney

Peter Zummo Quartet est composé de Josh Cole à la basse, Michael Davidson au vibraphone, Blake Howard aux percussions et Peter Zummo au trombone, à la voix et au synthétiseur. Ils joueront “Different Birds”, des compositions et des arrangements pour percussions improvisées et ensemble mélodique, avec des pistes d’accompagnement synthétisées d’un genre encore non spécifique et des segments de paroles non linéaires qui suggèrent des conversations entendues et des pensées intérieures. Malcolm Goldstein, contemporain de Zummo et Thouin, présent depuis les années 1960 sur la scène musicale internationale et locale, rejoint le quartet après une courte performance en solo. En ouverture de la soirée, le saxophoniste Aaron Leaney (Ratchet Orchestra) retrouve le légendaire batteur Guy Thouin pour interpréter la musique de leur premier album vinyle en duo, “Lockdown”, sorti sur le label Astral Spirits Records, basé à Austin, au Texas. Leur musique est profondément axée sur l’intersection entre l’héritage indo-caribéen de Leaney, les multiples exodes de Thouin en Inde dans les années 1970, lorsqu’il a étudié avec le gourou du tabla Karamuthulla, et leur vocabulaire commun d’improvisateurs acharnés, malgré l’écart d’âge de quatre décennies qui les sépare.

Peter Zummo Quartet consists of Josh Cole on bass, Michael Davidson on vibraphone, Blake Howard on percussion and Peter Zummo on trombone, voice and synthesizer. They will perform “Different Birds”, compositions and arrangements for improvised percussion and melodic ensemble, with as yet non-specific synthesized accompaniment tracks and non-linear lyric segments that suggest overheard conversations and inner thoughts. Zummo and Thouin’s contemporary Malcolm Goldstein, a fixture on the international and local music scene since the 1960s, joins the quartet after a short solo performance. Opening the evening, saxophonist Aaron Leaney (Ratchet Orchestra) reunites with legendary drummer Guy Thouin to perform music from their first duo vinyl album, “Lockdown”, released on Austin, Texas-based Astral Spirits Records. Their music is deeply focused on the intersection between Leaney’s Indo-Caribbean heritage, Thouin’s multiple exoduses to India in the 1970s, when he studied with tabla guru Karamuthulla, and their shared vocabulary of relentless improvisers, despite the four-decade age gap between them.

Lee & Gamble Unlimited is a musical project by Dylan Gamble, of Toronto psychedelic band Hot Garbage, and Sook-Yin Lee, award-winning filmmaker, musician, actor and animator. Das Mörtal displays a dark and occult musical universe, influenced by German techno and electroclash, as well as horror and sci-fi movie soundtracks. On stage, the producer/DJ immerses us in a retro-futuristic universe, something like a dreamy and frenetic alternative world, giving us an irresistible urge to dance.

Sur scène, le producteur/DJ nous plonge dans un univers rétro-futuriste, sorte de monde parallèle onirique et survolté, nous donnant l’irrésistible envie de danser.

A fixture in Montréal’s queer underground, Awwful is the cofounder and resident DJ of staple Mile End/Mile Ex parties Unikorn and Glitter Bomb. Their fiery DJ sets are known for blending bubblegum bass, hyperpop and deconstructed club music with pop hits, bringing the URL to the IRL. Their work as a producer, songwriter and vocalist is decidedly more introspective, borrowing textures and tones from the club to craft songs from the heart.

Figure emblématique de l’underground queer montréalais, Awwful est le cofondateur et le DJ résident des soirées Unikorn et Glitter Bomb, deux événements incontournables du Mile End/Mile Ex. Ses sets de DJ enflammés sont reconnus pour leur mélange de bubblegum bass, d’hyperpop et de musique de club déconstruite avec des hits pop, amenant l’URL à l’IRL. Leur travail en tant que producteur, compositeur et chanteur est résolument plus introspectif, empruntant des textures et des tonalités au club pour créer des chansons qui viennent du cœur.

Dirty Milk is a post-punk band from Montreal, QC. Initially a fiery punk-rock duo consisting life-long friends Lukas Beneteau-Forgues (guitar) and Bryan Thomas (drums), the band has begun to explore noise, free improvisation, and the avant-garde with addition of Josh Linnen (bass). Their frantic first EP, Squirm, was released independently in September 2023.
