Quatuor Bozzini : Composer’s Kitchen

by Rédaction PAN M 360

“Dare to do what you’ve never done before!”. Since 2005, this has been the motto to welcome several generations of creators of Composer’s Kitchen, a professional composition residency in string quartet writing. Offered to four emerging composers, this unique occasion is a combination of workshop, laboratory, masterclass, and concert settings. Throughout the multi-phase process, the composers are supported by — other than Quatuor Bozzini — the presence of experienced mentors who are amongst the most important figures in new music creation.

by Rédaction PAN M 360

Violonist Mark Fewer and composer/pianist Daniel Janke have worked together on several film and concert projects over the years. Revisiting Canadian folklore, Celestial Blue is the culmination of their desire to explore this musical connection through a series of duets that represent their unique collaborative voice.

While most of Celestial Blue‘s music is entirely composed, some works contain elements of improvisation or co-improvisation. It also draws heavily on gospel and other folk traditions, the melodies of which touch the two Canadian musicians deeply. The title Celestial Blue refers to the open blue sky and its infinite possibilities.

Electrochoc 5 : Soundwich

by Michel Rondeau

In addition to its festival, which has been held every fall for the past 16 years, Akousma offers year-round discussion-concerts in its Électrochoc series, which aims to familiarize the public with the world of electroacoustic music and celebrate the creativity of the students in the composition and performance classes of its artistic director, Louis Dufort, and his eminent colleague Martin Bédard. This is an opportunity to get to know some budding talents.

The concert is preceded by a lecture at 7:30 p.m., so it’s worth arriving a little earlier.

The Conservatoire’s Opera Workshop presents Cendrillon, by Jules Massenet

by Alexandre Villemaire

For their major lyrical production of the year, the students of the Conservatoire de musique turn into princes, princesses, godmothers and stepmothers in this adaptation by Jules Massenet of Charles Perreault’s tale. Up there with Werther and Manon among the composer’s greatest successes, Cendrillon seduces with its lyricism, its emblematic tunes (“Que mes soeurs sont heureuses”, “Ah! douce enfant”, and “Enfin, je suis ici”), its sparkling colours and its streak of humour treated with delicacy and elegance in music by the composer. This musical fairy tale is presented three evenings with two distinct casts.

“Harpenning III”: Caroline Lizotte and Valérie Milot

by Michel Rondeau

At the age of 10, Valérie Milot fell in love at first sight with the harp. Now a seasoned musician, she is involved in a wide variety of projects: chamber music, concertos, solo recitals, both classical and, on the electric harp, more rock-oriented. She is featured here in a duet with another distinguished harpist, Caroline Lizotte, in charge of the harp classes at the Faculty of Music of the Université de Montréal, and an accomplished composer. The latter’s harp works are in constant expansion, have won awards, and have been performed all over the world. That’s what they will be playing on this afternoon, and it’s a great opportunity for discovery.
