The only album Fiona Apple has released this past decade is also her most personal. She opens up in particular about the state of her mental health (“Every single night is a fight with my brain”), and her problems in connecting with others. The music that accompanies these confessions is just as intimate: the singer’s tortured voice is only supported by her spiraling piano and the most inventive arrangements of percussionist Charley Drayton. A work that mirrors its creator, as intense as it is original.
