Stefan Smulovitz has worked with Pauline Oliveros, Evan Parker, Uri Caine, Lori Freedman and many others. The Vancouver-based sound artist, composer and improviser plays the violin, viola, lyre, electroacoustic dvina and a range of percussion instruments including the waterphone and gongs. For those in the know, he is also the creator of the Kenaxis software used in electronic music.
Bow & Brush: 12 Scores of Nadina Tandy immerses us in a world of liquid weightlessness, gently swayed by a few tranquil undulations. This ambient music is inspired by Vancouver-based visual artist Nadina Tandy. She has created a series of paintings representing ‘graphic scores’ to be performed by a musician.
It’s a totally subjective exercise, but one that Smulovitz has carried off perfectly, capturing the essence of Tandy’s art. This is made up of bold colours, but generally deployed with softness and transparency, in a hazy abstraction with imprecise contours.
It’s all eminently pretty and restful.
A launch event will be held on 8 November at Espace 8east in Vancouver.
THE ALBUM WILL BE AVAILABLE ON 15 NOVEMBER.
