Rémi Bolduc is an ultra versatile saxophonist. He can, through a jazz framework solidly informed by the great rules of the genre, explore the rock, contemporary, Latin, Caribbean, funk, pop (and more) fringes that can rub against it. The Bolduc Groove Quintet showcases a journey into the heart of a coolness that moves with style and attitude. Eight original tracks carried as much by the master himself as by companions equally skilled in the confident groove. Excellent, therefore, are Nick Semenykhin on guitar (listen to him go in Sunset Square), Ira Coleman on double bass, Rich Irwin on drums, and Chantel de Villiers on saxophone (and with her very beautiful vocalisations on a few tracks).
In the interview he gave me about this album, Rémi also mentioned that it was Chantel who was behind it. Through the funky and soul pushes set against a rich hard bop background, Rémi balances the program with a Ballade for Chantel, an incursion into reggae (Nuit tropicale), and an astonishing rock explosion, quite startling but exciting (Rhythm Delight).
Jazz groove executed to perfection in a format that is certainly classic but always inspired.
