The influence of Viennese classicism is perceptible in Beethoven’s First Symphony. However, in this fiercely energetic score, innovative ideas abound, like the beginnings of a style that would assert itself over the years. The driving energy of Shostakovich’s Eighth Symphony is quite different: brutal, pathetic, merciless. This striking work evokes the dramatic climate of the war years, with irony as a response to suffering.

BEETHOVEN, Symphony No. 1 in C major, Op. 21 (26 min)
CHOSTAKOVICH, Symphony No. 8 in C minor, Op. 65 (61 min)

BEETHOVEN, Symphonie no 1 en do majeur, op. 21 (26 min)
CHOSTAKOVITCH, Symphonie no 8 en do mineur, op. 65 (61 min)
