SAM.IITO

Maputo-born and Montreal-based, Samito is a musician whose evolving body of work reflects a steadfast embrace of contemporary sounds and dialogues. Initially grounded in jazz, his work first came to public attention with the release of “Tiku La Hina”, catapulting him onto global stages at prestigious events like MUTEK, Osheaga, Reeperbahn, POP Montréal and SXSW. However, after three years of building momentum in Montréal’s competitive music scene, Samito made the daring choice, potentially contrary to the opinions of others, to take a hiatus from his career, transitioning to founding FEZIHAUS™, a venture described as a “label-inspired workroom” or a “civic effort.”. Throughout his journey, he has collaborated with a diverse array of talents, including Gaël Faye, Scratchclart, Daniel Haaksman, Aero Manyelo, and Philippe Cohen Solal, earning collaboration with labels such as Costume Records, Maison Kitsuné, and Man Recordings, and accolades such as the Revelation Radio – Canada and Félix Awards.
His latest project, ‘Des-Dobramento (Unfolding): Shame Cycle,’ comprises a 4-part song cycle that represents a deeply personal journey of reflection and reconciliation with his musical roots. Seeking to bridge a creative divide, Samito explores the classical music song cycle form, juxtaposed with jazz harmony structures with lyrical themes, delving into complex emotions, particularly regarding shame. This interplay between thematic movements and emotional resonance highlights Samito’s challenging aspiration to convey intricate structures and evoke profound reflections in both himself and his audience.

Dawn Cadence
