His His
Aidan Belo, musicien alt-folk basé à Toronto, est un nostalgique. Non pas tant dans le sens où il pense que tout était mieux à une époque révolue, mais dans le sens où il éprouve une profonde curiosité pour le passé et une sensibilité aiguë à l’étrange et insondable mystère que représente le temps qui passe. Un mot portugais permet d’expliquer cela : saudade. « C’est le mot qu’utilisaient les femmes de marins pour décrire ce sentiment pendant que leurs maris étaient partis en mer », explique M. Belo. “Il n’y a pas de traduction directe en anglais, mais c’est comme un désir, une mélancolie, une nostalgie, toutes ces choses réunies. Je veux évoquer ce genre d’émotions”. Ainsi, lorsqu’il a lancé son projet de folk alternatif et expérimental His His à l’automne 2020, il était naturel que le passé (et tous ses éléments constitutifs) soit un personnage, une esthétique et un principe directeur du projet. Belo a construit un studio de fortune dans une vieille grange située dans la ferme familiale de Schomberg, en Ontario, une minuscule communauté agricole située à une heure au nord de Toronto, où le père de Belo s’est installé après avoir immigré du Portugal. Belo a commencé à enregistrer sur place à l’aide d’un magnétophone 4 pistes Tascam Portastudio et, au cours de l’année suivante, il a sorti une série de singles et un premier EP, intitulé Garden Songs, qui date de 2021.
Toronto-based alt-folk musician Aidan Belo is a nostalgic person. Not so much in the sense of thinking everything was better in some way-back-when, but in the sense of carrying a deep curiosity toward the past, and an acute tuning to the strange, unfathomable mystery that is time passing. There’s a Portuguese word that helps to explain this: saudade. “That’s what the wives of sailors would use to describe this feeling while their husbands were gone at sea,” explains Belo. “There’s no direct English translation but it’s like longing, melancholy, nostalgia, all those things bundled up. I want to evoke those kinds of emotions.” So when he started his alternative and experimental folk project His His in the fall of 2020, it was natural that the past (and all its constituent parts) was a character, an aesthetic, and a guiding principle of the project. Belo constructed a makeshift studio in an old barn located on his family’s farm in Schomberg, Ontario, a tiny farming community an hour north of Toronto where Belo’s father landed after immigrating from Portugal. Belo began recording there using a Tascam Portastudio 4-track cassette recorder, and over the next year, he released a string of singles and a debut EP, 2021’s appropriately named Garden Songs.
Wallgrin
WALLGRIN est le projet artistique expérimental pop de la compositrice, chanteuse et violoniste Tegan Wahlgren, basée à Vancouver. S’inspirant de ses origines dans le violon celtique et le chant choral, le son de Wallgrin oscille entre une orchestration riche à base de cordes, une pop rythmée et des arrangements vocaux sophistiqués. Après avoir obtenu un diplôme en composition de musique électroacoustique, le style musical de Wallgrin s’est défini : proche de la pop mais décalé, n’ayant jamais peur d’expérimenter. De leur premier album « Bird/Alien » sorti en 2018 à leur dernier album « Yet Again The Wheel Turns », l’univers de Wallgrin a toujours tourné autour d’images fantastiques et mythologiques. Qualifié d’« artiste innovant qui commence tout juste à déployer ses multiples talents » par CBC Music, et de compositeur « à la hauteur des standards fixés par des visionnaires de l’art-pop comme Björk et Kate Bush » (Northern Transmissions), ses performances live énergiques et brutes l’ont conduit à se produire à Iceland Airwaves (2023), The Great Escape (Royaume-Uni, 2023), Tallinn Music Week (Estonie, 2021) et FOCUS Wales (2021).
WALLGRIN is the experimental art-pop project of Vancouver-based composer, vocalist and violinist Tegan Wahlgren. Called “an innovative artist who is just starting to flex their myriad skills and talents” by CBC Music, and a songwriter who “measures up to standards set by art-pop visionaries like Björk and Kate Bush” (Northern Transmissions), their spirited and raw live performances have led them to perform at Iceland Airwaves (2023), The Great Escape (UK, 2023), Tallinn Music Week (Estonia, 2021), and FOCUS Wales (2021).
Tachie Menson
Nia Blankson, désormais connue sous le nom de Tachie Menson, est une nouvelle artiste solo. Elle est pianiste classique de métier, mais sa musique originale pourrait être classée dans la catégorie R&B alternatif et indie. Elle a commencé à développer son empreinte musicale avec la sortie de son premier single, « Another Day ».
Nia Blankson, now under the moniker Tachie Menson, is a new solo artist. She is a classical pianist by trade, but her original music could be categorized as alternative R&B, and indie. She has begun developing her musical fingerprint with the release of her first single, “Another Day.”
Avril Jensen
Avril Jensen propose une musique indie pop planante et rocambolesque qui se situe à l’intersection de l’acoustique et de l’électro. En anglais comme en français, la jeune artiste fait de ses chansons de courtes histoires tantôt émouvantes, tantôt désinvoltes. Son initiateur extrait intitulé « Attends (feat. EXKY) » a vu le jour à l’automne 2021. Elle laissait paraître, en avril 2022 un premier EP en carrière, « COLORS » (nommé au GAMIQ 2022 /EP pop), reflétant des expériences vécues tout autant que des essais musicaux. Sa chanson « van gogh » lui permet de remporter le Prix de la Fondation SOCAN – jeune auteur-compositeur canadien. En octobre 2024, l’artiste dévoile son premier album complet « Is Any of This Real? ». Ce premier opus est une immersion dans son monde, où elle décortique avec douceur et sensibilité tous les questionnements qui l’habitent. Toujours en création, la jeune auteure-compositrice-interprète présentera son premier EP francophone à l’automne. Avec une voix douce et envoûtante, elle chante sur des thèmes personnels autant que sur des histoires inventées : nous ouvrant les portes de son univers immersif et inspirant.
Avril Jensen’s soaring, rocambolic indie pop music lies at the intersection of acoustic and electro. In both English and French, the young artist turns her songs into short stories, at times moving, at times flippant. Her first single, “Attends (feat. EXKY)”, was released in autumn 2021. In April 2022, she released her first career EP, “COLORS” (nominated for a GAMIQ 2022 /EP pop award), reflecting her experiences as much as her musical experiments. His song “van gogh” wins him the Prix de la Fondation SOCAN – young Canadian songwriter. In October 2024, the artist unveils his first full-length album, “Is Any of This Real? This first opus is an immersion in her world, in which she gently and sensitively explores all the questions that live within her. Still creating, the young singer-songwriter will present her first French EP in the autumn. With her soft, haunting voice, she sings about personal themes as much as invented stories: opening the doors to her immersive, inspiring universe.
