Prog Rock

Stick Men au Club Soda avec des membres de King Crimson

by Rédaction PAN M 360

FEATURING MEMBERS OF KING CRIMSON

TONY LEVIN AND PAT MASTELOTTO,

AND TOUCH GUITAR INNOAVATOR MARKUS REUTER

RETURN TO MONTREAL

Stick Men is a band like no other. Admittedly, this is an overused description, but it is the only way to describe the band properly. Over the backdrop of intricate electroacoustic percussive soundscapes composed by drummer Pat Mastelotto (Mr. Mister, King Crimson, The Rembrandts, XTC, Martin Briley, and several hundred others), their melodic constructions are built only using instruments of the tapping family, masterfully, virtuously and beautifully executed by one of the most celebrated session bassists in the world, Tony Levin (Peter Gabriel, King Crimson, John Lennon, Paul Simon, Chuck Mangione, Lou Reed, David Bowie, and several thousand others, and their moms) and one of the most creative composers and producers of the past twenty years, psychologist, musicologist, instrument designer and multi-instrumentalist Markus Reuter (Centrozoon, Europa String Choir, This Fragile Moment, and a over a hundred other genre-defying collaborations). Their music is virtuosic and high-tech, yet spiritual and organic. Deeply complex, yet beautifully sensible. Abrasively rocking, yet soothingly melodic. It is progressive music, and it is rock music, but it is not Prog-Rock in the dinosauric sense of the genre. The sum is much, much larger than the parts. They achieve what few other bands in the art-rock realm achieve in this post-modern, post-truth era: Resonance. Without that resonance, that ability to create memorable music, I wouldn’t be writing this essay

Naxx Bitota at Club Balattou

by Rédaction PAN M 360

Born under the sun of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Naxx – whose real name is Alexandra – discovers her passion for music at the age of 9, and pursues it within several choirs of different styles: gospel, traditional, classical, folk. Author, composer, and performer, influenced by classical music and popular music of her country, she shows through her compositions, her admiration for the different rhythms of Africa.

Thanks to her artistic generosity, her extraordinary energy, her melodious voice, and especially her very personal sound, she performs on the stages of the International Festival Nuits d’Afrique in collaboration with several local artists, at the Festival Makossa, among others. Committed and very festive, she pursues her inspiration in the “rumba-soukous” style.

In the spring of 2018, she participated in the series “Rythmes au féminin” of the Productions Nuits d’Afrique at Club Balattou. In 2020, she offers four live concerts during the confinement. A way for her to gather and pay tribute to the different parts of Africa (Central Africa, South Africa, East Africa and West Africa).

Her reunion with the public within the framework of the Voices of Women will have a very special flavor. She has maintained her connection with her community, has continued to move forward, and has offered a virtual event that is both gentle and immersive, and will undoubtedly have much to share with us.

Pop

Gab Paquet au Club Soda

by Rédaction PAN M 360

Brian Jonestown Massacre at Le National

by Rédaction PAN M 360

Named after the legendary Rolling Stones guitarist (Brian Jones), thus consecrating his influence in the world of western rock’n’roll, The Brian Jonestown Massacre was born in 1990, more precisely in the San Francisco area. About 40 different members have been part of the band, but the undisputed leader is still the troubled, but very creative, Anton Newcombe.

The band has gone through many phases, but even today, The Brian Jonestown Massacre is an unavoidable reference when it comes to psychedelic rock. A band led by one of the most important standard bearers of this musical genre. Without a doubt, Anton Newcombe is the iconoclast par excellence of “pot” rock.

New Wave / Post-Punk

Kennyhoopla at L’Astral

by Rédaction PAN M 360

KennyHoopla emerged out of the Midwestern underground in the latter years of the 2010s with a series of buzz-worthy singles that merged aspects of new wave, post-punk, and R&B. One of the first signings to the newly launched Arista imprint Mogul Vision Music, he released his debut album, Survivors Guilt: The Mixtape//, in 2021.

Born Kenneth La’Ron in Cleveland, Ohio, Hoopla began making music at a young age, influenced by acts like Funeral Suits, Passion Pit, and the Drums. Based out of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, his early tracks were loosely labeled rap, though his dark-toned, guitar-based songs and aching contemplative vocals had more in common with indie rock and alt-R&B. He gained traction both regionally and online with 2017’s “Waves//” single and its 2018 follow-up, “Sickness.” When Sony relaunched Arista Records in 2019, Hoopla was among the first acts to join the label’s new Mogul Vision roster, and he delivered the highly touted singles “Lost Cause//” and “Sore Loser//.” The buzz continued to grow as he relocated to Los Angeles and kicked off 2020 with the aggressive, post-punk-influenced “how will i rest in peace if i’m buried by a highway?//.” In 2021, he released the full-length Survivors Guilt: The Mixtape//, which featured contributions by drummer Travis Barker.

Altin Gun plays Le National

by Rédaction PAN M 360

Turkish psych folk band Altin Gün is easy to fall in love with. The band, which hails from Amsterdam but comes from various backgrounds (Turkish, Indonesian, Dutch) creates music that opens doors between traditional Turkish folk songs and psych.
They’ve built a strong reputation for fusing past and present to make brilliantly catchy, upbeat pop music, as seen with their Grammy-nominated second album, Gece. Yol, their third album in as many years, continues that trend; while unveiling a number of sonic surprises.

Instrumental Rock

MONO at Théâtre Fairmount

by Rédaction PAN M 360

The Tokyo, Japan based 4-piece Instrumental Rock band MONO was originally formed in 1999. Their unique approach of combining moving orchestral arrangements and shoegaze guitar noise is held in extremely high regard; so much so, that the band’s musicianship and the diverse musical palette has eclipsed the Rock genre and exists within its own realm. As British Musical Magazine NME once stated, “this is music for the Gods”.

Over the first decade, MONO rapidly established a well-acclaimed status, especially with their live performances. Through their annual world tour consisting of around 150 shows, visiting now over 59 countries, both critics and fans of Rock music agree their sheer euphoric, dynamic resonance of performance make MONO one of the best live bands in existence. A particularly monumental early live memory was special set of orchestra shows celebrating the 10th anniversary in New York, Tokyo, London and Melbourne; which was later immortalised as the live album “Holy Ground”. MONO now also proudly holds the title of being one of the most internationally successful bands in Japan.

Hip Hop

Sampa the Great at l’Astral

by Rédaction PAN M 360

Born in Zambia, raised in Botswana, and now based in Melbourne, her upbringing continues to bear an influence on her music. Moving to Australia six years ago, the connections she made there have propelled her to where she now stands. Living in Sydney when she first arrived, it was the shock of losing a close friend which prompted her to take the leap to try to become an artist. Going to the city’s weekly Jazz Hip-Hop Freestyle sessions for the first time, she went on stage to join the band and continued to go there each week, building up a network of like-minded music heads. It was there that she connected with producer Dave Rodriguez (Godriguez), who she worked with on 2015’s “The Great Mixtape” and again for the ‘Blue Boss’ single. In 2016 Sampa released “Heroes Act 2” a collaboration with Estelle and Rahki as part of a project with Red Bull Sound Select. Following the success of “BEE9”, Sampa capped off 2018 with new single ‘Energy’ – premiered via Zane Lowe’s show on Apple Music’s Beats 1 and clocking up over 1M views on Youtube. She also recently collaborated with Denzel Curry on his Triple J ‘Like A Version’ session.
