La musique : être né dedans, c’est une affaire; s’en faire une vie, c’est de ça dont on parle. Jeune homme attachant et détaché originaire de Saint-Prime, Gab Bouchard a grandi entouré d’un certain canon jeannois : son père – un tueur de drum nommé Pierre Bouchard – avait un band de covers avec Noël Fortin (quant à lui père d’un autre Primois qui se passe de présentation). Son apprentissage musical se fait promptement, et, après quelques années d’essais et erreurs, il lance de façon indépendante l’EP country-rock aux touches pop Cerveau-lent en 2017. Éperonné par l’engouement local, il met ensuite le cap sur Montréal afin de recréer le buzz dans la métropole, précédé de sa caractéristique moustache.

Nouvel album, dit-on – Grafignes, paru le 26 août 2022, témoigne du chemin parcouru depuis le premier, prenant davantage son temps et son espace, et nourrie de la nouvelle amitié entretenue avec son claviériste Mathieu Quenneville. Une collection aux thèmes à la fois « plus lousses et plus lourds sur le mental », traitant d’être acculé au pied du mur, d’introspection, de vieilles connaissances et d’aussi vieilles histoires, portée par des influences country et 70s aux gros riffs et aux chœurs planants.

Being born into music is one thing but making it one’s life is quite another. A charming and nonchalant young man from Saint-Prime, Gab Bouchard grew up among some of Lac-Saint-Jean’s most heavy hitters, including his father, drummer Pierre Bouchard, whose name was immortalized in the title of Gros Mené’s first record and who played in a cover band with Noël Fortin (father to another famous musician from Saint-Prime who needs no introduction). He quickly turned to music, and after a few years of trial and error, released Cerveau-lent, a country-rock EP with pop leanings, in 2017. Buoyed by local success, he and his trademark mustache headed to Montreal to take things to the next level in the big city.

The hotly anticipated second album Grafignes, released on August 26 2022, serves as a follow-up to Triste pareil. It’s a testament to the progress he’s made as an artist since then, having taken the time to carve out more space for himself as his new friendship with keyboardist Mathieu Quenneville flourished. The album explore themes that are at once “looser and psychologically heavier,” dealing with the feeling of being backed into a corner, looking inward, old acquaintances and memories that are just as old. Influenced by country music, big 70s rock riffs and soaring backup vocal.

At the Gates a été formé à Göteborg, en Suède, en 1990, par d’anciens membres du groupe de death/black metal Grotesque. Ils ont enregistré un premier EP, Gardens of Grief, pour le label Dolores. Depuis sa création en 1992, le fondateur de Built to Spill, Doug Martsch, a fait de son groupe un projet de collaboration, un ensemble en constante évolution de musiciens incroyables qui font de la musique et se produisent en concert ensemble. Après plusieurs albums et EP, dont l’incontournable classique du indie rock, There’s Nothing Wrong With Love, sorti en 1994 sur le label Sup Pop offshoot Up, Martsch a signé avec Warner Brothers de 1995 à 2016. Lui et ses acolytes ont enregistré six autres albums, incontestablement excellents, pendant cette période.

Si l’impeccable catalogue discographique du groupe est le point d’entrée, Built to Spill en live est une FORCE essentielle à part entière : des morceaux heavy, psychédéliques, mélodiques et viscéraux s’échappant d’amplis qui sonnent comme s’ils étaient alimentés par des camions Mack.

En 2022, Built to Spill revient avec When the Wind Forgets Your Name, l’incroyable nouvel album de Martsch (et aussi son huitième album complet), un mélange complexe et cohérent des idées musicales distinctes des artistes. Since its inception in 1992, Built to Spill founder Doug Martsch intended his beloved band to be a collaborative project, an ever-evolving group of incredible musicians making music and playing live together.
