Concert bénéfice des étudiants en piano classique au Cégep de Saint-Laurent

Il s’agit d’un concert bénéfice d’étudiant.es finissant en piano qui aura lieu le 25 mars afin de financer un voyage de fin d’études au Conservatoire de Limoges ce printemps. C’est un concert composé exclusivement d’œuvres pour piano de compositeurs québécois. Denis Gougeon, André Lamarche et Jeanne Desaulniers, épouse de feu Jacques Hétu (1938-2010), seront présent en tant qu’invités d’honneurs.

This is a benefit concert for graduating piano students that will take place on March 25th to finance a graduation trip to the Conservatoire de Limoges this spring. It is a concert composed exclusively of piano works by Quebec composers. Denis Gougeon, André Lamarche and Jeanne Desaulniers, wife of the late Jacques Hétu (1938-2010), will be present as guests of honour.

Romain Malagnoux au Club Balattou

Passionné par les musiques d’origines ouest-africaines, Romain Malagnoux, auteur, compositeur, chanteur et guitariste entreprend en 2009 un voyage de 4 mois au Mali afin de découvrir la culture musicale de ce pays et rencontrer des musiciens avec qui échanger. Évoluant jusqu’alors dans des styles d’influences afro-américaines (soul, folk, pop et rock anglophone), Romain tisse des liens amicaux et artistiques avec le joueur de djeli n’goni Moustafa Kouyaté avec lequel, lors d’un second séjour au Mali, il compose, enregistre et produit l’album “Les frontières imaginaires”, (lauréat en 2014 d’un Canadian Folk Music Award et d’un Independant Music Award – USA) en compagnie de musiciens maliens et québécois. On peut entendre “La ligne bleue”, extrait de cet album sur la Compilation Putumayo “World Cafe 2021”.

Membre fondateur du groupe “La Pirogue” (Prix de la Diversité en musique du Conseil des Arts de Montréal et Syli d’Argent 2019), Romain se concentre en 2020 sur ses premières amours musicales et prépare actuellement un album fait de compositions de style soul, folk et pop.

Romain emmène l’auditeur dans un voyage aux émotions changeantes: mélancolie, douce joie, tendresse évasive, amour passionné, joie explosive… La variété et l’énergie des chansons rappellent plusieurs cultures auxquelles Romain a été exposé depuis plusieurs années.

Passionate about West African music, Romain Malagnoux, author, composer, singer and guitarist, undertook a 4-month trip to Mali in 2009 in order to discover the musical culture of this country and meet musicians with whom to exchange. Evolving until then in Afro-American influenced styles (soul, folk, pop and English rock), Romain forges friendly and artistic links with the djeli n’goni player Moustafa Kouyaté with whom, during a second stay in Mali, he composes, records and produces the album “Les frontières imaginaires”, (winner in 2014 of a Canadian Folk Music Award and an Independent Music Award – USA) in the company of Malian and Quebec musicians. You can hear “La ligne bleue”, an extract from this album on the Putumayo Compilation “World Cafe 2021”.

Founding member of the group “La Pirogue” (Montreal Arts Council Diversity in Music Award and Syli d’Argent 2019), Romain is focusing on his first love of music in 2020 and is currently preparing an album of soul, folk and pop style compositions.

Romain takes the listener on a journey of changing emotions: melancholy, sweet joy, evasive tenderness, passionate love, explosive joy… The variety and energy of the songs are reminiscent of many of the cultures to which Romain has been exposed for many years.

Debby Friday au Centre Phi

Le premier album de DEBBY FRIDAY, GOOD LUCK, paraîtra au printemps via Sub Pop et Arts & Crafts (au Canada). S’étant récemment établie de Vancouver à Toronto, DEBBY a collaboré avec un producteur pour la toute première fois dans la conception d’un de ses projet, soit le compositeur nommé aux prix Juno et Polaris, Graham Walsh. Rehaussée par cette coopération, la valeur de production ajoute un certain pouvoir d’attraction à la flexibilité du genre: imaginez un monde où Sevdaliza rencontrerait Death Grips.

Peu d’artistes font les choses comme DEBBY. La pièce I GOT IT, lucide, à saveur acid house et à haut BPM (qu’elle livre accompagnée de Chris Vargas de Pelada et Uñas) la rend plus insolente et vaniteuse que jamais. L’artiste est toujours attirée par certaines tonalités et ambiances (les sombres ré et fa mineurs sont omniprésents sur cet album), suggérant du même coup la mélancolie et une certaine obscurité. Cependant, le premier extrait, SO HARD TO TELL, voit celle-ci se débarrasser de tous ses élans industriels pour concocter une chanson pop au falsetto totalement assumé. Ce morceau ensoleillé est un marqueur crucial dans l’expansion sonore de FRIDAY.

DEBBY FRIDAY’S debut long-player GOOD LUCK arrives on Sub Pop & Arts & Crafts (in Canada) this spring. DEBBY recently re-located from Vancouver to Toronto, and for her debut she worked with a producer for the first time: Juno- and Polaris Prize- nominated composer Graham Walsh. The jump up in production value adds a sort of heft and pull to the genre, flexibility on parade here: think of it a little like Sevdaliza meets Death Grips.

Few do it like DEBBY, though. Lucid, acid housey, high-BPM track I GOT IT—accompanied by Chris Vargas of Pelada and Uñas—has her unprecedentedly cocksure and vainglorious. She’s still drawn to certain keys and moods (the brooding D and F minor are all over this album) to suggest melancholia, darkness. However, her lead single SO HARD TO TELL sees FRIDAY shed all of her signature industrial tropes, to deliver a completely out of pocket, and totally assured, falsetto pop song. This sun-bright track is a crucial signifier in FRIDAY’S expansion.

Née en Slovaquie, l’amour de Nikoleta Frajkorova pour la musique s’est développé dès son plus jeune âge, et au milieu de l’adolescence, l’appétit pour le genre électronique était prioritaire sur tout le reste. Son succès en Slovaquie a attiré l’attention de Markus Schulz, originaire de Miami, et en 2014, Nifra a rejoint les rangs de Schulz Music Group, ce qui lui a permis d’entrer en contact avec le public nord-américain et de le divertir pour la première fois. Ses prestations à Transmission à Bratislava, A state of Trance à Den Bosch, Space à Miami ou Club Avalon à Los Angeles l’ont projetée comme l’une des principales figures féminines représentant la scène de la musique de danse. En connectant le monde avec un talent aussi contagieux que son sourire, et en inspirant les femmes à suivre ses traces dans le monde des DJ, Nifra prend tout cela à bras-le-corps.

Sik-K est né Kwon Min-sik à Séoul en 1994. Adolescent, il a vécu brièvement à Vancouver, en Colombie-Britannique, avant de retourner en Corée du Sud pour se consacrer à la musique. Il a participé à la saison 2015 de Show Me the Money et a commencé la même année à sortir ses propres morceaux. Il a sorti son premier EP, FLIP, sur le label OTC en 2016, mais a rapidement signé avec H1ghr Music. Au cours des années suivantes, Sik-K sort divers EP et mixtapes, notamment les très variés H.A.L.F. (Have.A.Little.Fun) et Boycold en 2017 et TRAPART en 2018. Son premier album studio, FL1P, est arrivé au début de 2019, avec des contributions de Crush, Jessi et the Quiett. L’album a culminé à la 28e place du classement Gaon. Il l’a suivi en septembre de la même année avec S.O.S. (Sink or Swim), une collaboration avec l’artiste à la vision similaire Coogie.

Sik-K was born Kwon Min-sik in Seoul in 1994. He lived briefly in Vancouver, British Columbia as a teenager before returning to South Korea to pursue music. Derek Gripper au Club Balattou

« Mon jumeau blanc ! » s’est exclamé le maître de la kora, Toumani Diabaté, en écoutant la transposition de ses morceaux à la guitare classique. Derek Gripper s’est lancé dans une démarche artistique : adapter sur une guitare à 6 cordes toute la richesse et la complexité des accords subtils émanant de cette majestueuse harpe africaine à 21 cordes. Avec le plus grand respect de l’instrument et des traditions, il a accompli l’exploit, rendant un hommage époustouflant au formidable patrimoine de la musique mandingue. Après une prestation inoubliable lors de la dernière édition du Festival international Nuits d’Afrique, Derek nous fait l’honneur de revenir à Montréal directement depuis Le Cap en Afrique du Sud pour un concert intimiste au Balattou le jeudi 23 mars.

“My white twin!” That’s what the renowned kora master Toumani Diabaté called Derek Gripper after hearing his own music being played on the classical guitar. Derek Gripper launched on an artistic process: undertaking of adapting kora music to a six-string guitar while retaining all the richness, subtlety and chord complexity of the majestic 21-string African harp. And it is with the utmost respect for the kora and its traditions that he accomplished this sensational feat, through which he pays tribute to the fabulous heritage of Mandinka music. After an unforgettable performance at the last edition of the Nuits d’Afrique International Festival, Derek honors us by coming back to Montreal directly from Cape Town, South Africa for an intimate concert at Balattou on Thursday, March 23rd.

Anna Of The North est Anna Lotterud, une artiste électro-pop dont le travail s’inscrit dans une atmosphère chaude et brumeuse. Originaire de la ville norvégienne de Gjøvik, Anna a rencontré le producteur néo-zélandais Brady Daniell-Smith lors d’un de ses concerts alors qu’elle étudiait à Melbourne, en Australie. La formation se popularise en 1999 avec la sortie de Wisconsin Death Trip, album au son metal industriel qui attire l’intérêt dans la scène émergente nu metal à la fin des années 1990 et sera certifié disque de platine aux États-Unis.

Static-X is an American industrial metal band formed in 1994 from Los Angeles, California. The founders are singer and guitarist Wayne Static and drummer Ken Jay. The band became popular in 1999 with the release of Wisconsin Death Trip, an industrial metal sounding album that attracted interest in the emerging nu metal scene in the late 1990s and was certified platinum in the United States.
