Upstairs Jam Session avec Jim Doxas et invité spécial!

by Rédaction PAN M 360

Jim has been heavily influenced by rock, jazz, Motown and World Music. His work can be heard on over 150 albums and soundtracks, and he is a popular featured artist at jazz festivals worldwide. Distinguished for his improvisational approach to jazz, he makes the case that percussion can be as performative as a lyrical instrument. What distinguishes Doxas’ approach to improvisation is that he refuses to play it safe, allowing the moment to dictate the kind of framework that will contain, shape and guide the piece of music. He is astutely committed to the belief that significant music is always distinguished by what is left unsaid, the gaps of which inspire him to produce a highly original vocabulary of accents.

Active on the music scene for over twenty years, Johnston has performed and recorded with many of the worlds best, including John Abercrombie, Don Alias, Shirley Jeff Johnston is a Canadian based jazz pianist, film composer, and educator. His works are infused with alluring harmonies, lush textures, rhythmic inventiveness and spontaneity. Chuck Berg of Jazz Times Magazine wrote “This is music, that while at the contemporary cutting edge, is both immediately and immensely satisfying.” Johnston’s trio and quartet recordings established him as one of the country’s most respected pianists and composers, leading the Toronto Star’s Geoff Chapman to deem Johnston as “clearly in Canada’s top ranks” and the Globe and Mail’s Mark Miller to say ” This is Canadian jazz at it’s best”.

Al McLean Quarter at the Upstairs Jazz

by Rédaction PAN M 360

One of Canada’s preeminent saxophone talents, Al McLean owns the night in the grand old Jazz city of Montreal. Mentoring countless students of the music, McLean’s brute force, and seemingly bottomless depths as an improviser set a unique standard of excellence. With an equally nimble command of bebop, and more avant garde repertoire rooted in the language of Coltrane, McLean is sought after by both Canadian and international players.

Taurey Butler Trio Plays Upstairs

by Rédaction PAN M 360

Taurey Butler is a phenomenal jazz pianist of the highest calibre.

Hailing from East Orange, New Jersey, he has played in numerous cities across the world from Hong Kong to New York and now makes his home in Montréal. Taurey’s debut self-titled recording on the Justin Time label was released in November 2011 to resounding critical acclaim. He emerges as a fully-formed master of hard-driving swing with a deep feeling for the blues and ballads.

It’s easy to get lost in the fire and funk, the sweetness and swing, of Taurey Butler. But you can also follow the light that his music emanates.

Kevin Dean • Jean-Michel Pilc

by Alain Brunet

Montrealers by adoption, as they are both jazz teachers at the Schulich School, French pianist Jean-Michel Pilc and American trumpet player Kevin Dean founded a quartet together, along with double bassist Martin Helsop and drummer Louis-Vincent Hamel. A profusion of improvisation is on the program, but also strong grounding in modern jazz… if Dean’s relatively conservative resume is any indication. One can certainly expect jazz of the highest level.

Kevin Dean: trumpet
JMP: piano
Martin Heslop: double bass
Louis-Vincent Hamel: drums
