POP Montréal 2026 : Martha Wainwright sur le toit du Rialto

by Rédaction PAN M 360

Born into music royalty, the daughter of folk legends Kate McGarrigle and Loudon Wainwright III and sister to the highly acclaimed, genre defying singer Rufus Wainwright, Martha grew up in a world filled with incomparable musical legends Anna McGarrigle, Leonard Cohen, Suzzy Roche, Richard and Linda Thompson, Emmylou Harris and struggled to find her voice in a milieu in which every drama was refracted through song. Then, in 2005, she released her critically acclaimed debut album, Martha Wainwright, which containing the blistering hit, “Bloody Mother F*cking Asshole,” which the Sunday Times called one of the best songs of the year. That release, and the albums that followed, such as Come Home to Mama (2012) and Love Will Be Reborn (2021), showcased Martha’s searing songwriting style and established her as a powerful voice to be reckoned with.

POP Montréal 2026 : Bells Larsen sur le toit du Rialto

by Rédaction PAN M 360

On his sophomore album Blurring Time (2025), Bells Larsen collapses past and present into an intimate meditation on becoming. Moving between spacious lo-fi ’90s indie and searing folk ballads, the album is structured around Larsen’s transition: he recorded his previous “high” voice in 2022, waited for his voice to drop after starting testosterone, and asked longtime friend and frequent collaborator Georgia Harmer to arrange harmonies for his new “low” voice. By placing both at the forefront, Blurring Time becomes a living duet—a bold, unyielding devotional that has drawn attention from artists including Katie Gavin and The Japanese House.

POP Montréal 2026 : Le Ren sur le toit du Rialto

by Rédaction PAN M 360

On Don’t Be Funny Without Me (DBFWM), Le Ren tells us, “I love the man I wanted to be,” as a matter of tender fact. She is funny while devastating, self-aware and a little self-deceiving. Across the record, she holds those contradictions close: shameless and ashamed, honest but still searching for a version of the truth that hurts a little less. At its core, DBFWM explores love, jealousy, and the uneasy ways the two often intertwine. Across the album, Le Ren reflects on emotional entanglements from her twenties and the lingering push-and-pull between attachment, envy, and self-awareness. The result is a record that is both tender and sharply observant, balancing sincerity with a quiet, self-protective humour. Le Ren, if you didn’t already know, is the funny one. After touring extensively opening for acts like Jeff Tweedy, Devendra Banhart, and Men I Trust, Le Ren returned to Canada to record the album in Mountain Grove, Ontario. Self-produced alongside old friends Fez Gielen and Jonas Bonetta, DBFWM carries a distinctly Canadian sensibility—Le Ren’s lyrics are imbued with that northern endurance, like watching the sunset fade behind the cracked asphalt on avenue du Parc, or from the parking lot of your favourite On Route. Sonically, DBFWM is more expansive than its predecessor: fuller arrangements, layered harmonies, and driving instrumentation that complement Le Ren’s angelic vocals. The record evokes the warmth of classic influences like Emmylou Harris and the emotional edge of Gillian Welch, while remaining firmly rooted in her own evolving voice. Don’t Be Funny Without Me ends where it begins: with Le Ren craving an uncomplicated, pure love—something closer to her relationship with music itself. In doing so, she sings her evolving, aspirational self into being. Aching and intoxicating, the record feels like a post-breakup road trip with your best friend: no fixed destination, a trunk full of baggage (literal and figurative) and mottled sunlight warming your face through the car window.

POP Montréal : La Force au Rialto Rooftop

by Rédaction PAN M 360

La Force is the mesmerizing solo project of Ariel Engle, who has spent more than a decade as one of Canada’s most sought-after musical collaborators. Born and based in Montreal, Engle’s experience reaches from Broken Social Scene’s indie rock to Québecois pop and the experimental avant-garde, culminating in her first two solo records, 2018’s La Force, and the astonishing XO SKELETON, released in 2023. XO SKELETON is the supple, steady, uncanny new album by La Force: a mixture of haunted pop and hot-blooded R&B that glistens at the meeting-point between life, death, and love. It is a kind of reckoning: a coming-to-terms with the oblivion that bookends a life, but also the gooey center of love, loss, touch, and memory. In 2018 Engle released La Force, garnering a Polaris Prize long-list nomination and drawing attention from Stereogum, the Globe & Mail, and NPR’s “Morning Becomes Electric,” as well as The National’s Aaron Dessner, who recruited Engle to appear on the 2021 Big Red Machine LP alongside Bon Iver, Taylor Swift, Fleet Foxes and Sharon Van Etten. Engle was also invited to contribute to recent records by Safia Nolin, one of the most important singer-songwriters in French Canada, and Patrick Watson, who used their collaboration as the lead single on 2022’s Better In The Shade. Meanwhile, Engle has shared stages with the likes of Maggie Rogers, Martha Wainwright and The Barr Brothers.

POP Montréal : Charlotte Cornfield

by Rédaction PAN M 360

It’s been less than two years since Highs in the Minuses became Charlotte Cornfield’s break-out—a magnetic mission-statement for the Toronto songwriter described by Rolling Stone as “Canada’s best-kept secret.” She could have kept touring forever; she could have fled to the woods with a four-track. What she did was jump into an old Subaru, driving seven hours south to the Hudson Valley, and make a record in an old church, dubbed Dreamland. The resulting album, Could Have Done Anything, is at once a gaze in Cornfield’s rear-view and a squint through the sunset to see what’s ahead.
