PAN M 360 at Nuits d’Afrique | Guinea in Circus!

The first “big” show of the Nuits d’Afrique 2024, Afrique en Cirque unfolded on Wednesday at Montreal’s Olympia to a full house. There was a big appetite for this Afro-Quebec circus, this time centered on Guinean culture, typical of West Africa.

“I’ve worked for just about every circus in Quebec on the international scene, and I felt there was something missing: African acrobatics. So I wanted to put on a show about my native Guinea,” explains Yamoussa Bangoura, founder of the troupe. A multi-instrumentalist and acrobat, the leader of Kalabanté has delved into the traditional legacy of Guinea, his homeland, to create a series of musical-circus tableaux, spanning some 90 minutes.

Dynamic, impressive, thrilling, entertaining, humorous, festive, martial, athletic, virtuoso. These are just some of the epithets to describe these acrobatic and choreographic maneuvers of high acrobatics. Four men and two women, some of them amazing contortionists, adapt circus arts to African traditions. They reproduce everyday, traditional practices such as fishing, the market and village feasts, not to mention a few nods to Western life, such as this hilarious number by muscular males à la Village People.

Three musicians accompany them (bass, drums, saxophone, effects pedals, etc.), not to mention the ringmaster, who is in fact the main musician (kora, djembé singing and other percussion instruments) as well as being an acrobat and Kalabanté’s artistic director. Based in Montreal for over two decades, Yamoussa Bangoura is well acquainted with some of the world’s most innovative circus practices, far beyond Cirque du Soleil. A seasoned percussionist, he has instilled the practice of percussion in his fellow acrobats, who regularly contribute to pounding large drums whose horizontals are somewhat reminiscent of Japanese kodo.

The musical direction is hybrid, between traditional Mandingo music and modern Western music (funk, a touch of jazz, etc.). Not rocket science if you know these styles, but solidly executed. The most lasting memory of this evening is that the rich culture of West Africa has legitimately appropriated the universal circus.

Zeca has recorded 15 albums (including his first album, which sold platinum), 3 DVDs and has his own television show. His creative, joyful and heartfelt songs are typical of the everyday, easy-going nature of the Carioca, a resident of the wonderful city of Rio de Janeiro. On his 2023 tour, Zeca brings the samba vibe to Montreal on May 31 at the Olympia.

Marillion à l’Olympia

La musique de Marillion est, par nature, difficile à résumer, mais on peut peut-être la décrire approximativement comme du rock à la fois expérimental et émotionnel, marié à des paroles provocantes et pleines d’âme – un cocktail puissant et émouvant qui, pour ceux qui l’ont compris, suscite une dévotion extraordinaire. Sa base de fans mondiale est impressionnante et hyper-engagée, les fans parcourant souvent des milliers de kilomètres pour assister aux concerts. Il n’est donc pas étonnant que le groupe ait été bien placé pour exploiter cette foi et cette confiance afin de proposer un autre mode de fonctionnement.

Après plus de trente ans, le groupe ne montre aucun signe de ralentissement et de nouvelles générations de jeunes fans découvrent la musique par eux-mêmes. Et il y en a beaucoup. Avec un catalogue de 18 albums, Marillion a écrit une musique qui puise dans tous les genres et peut être considéré comme progressiste, non seulement d’un point de vue musical, mais aussi dans tous les sens du terme.

Okean Elzy à l’Olympia – Tournée Help for Ukraine

Okean Elzy se produira aux États-Unis et au Canada en avril-mai 2023 dans le cadre de la tournée Help for Ukraine. Les recettes du concert seront utilisées pour l’aide humanitaire aux enfants touchés par la guerre, ainsi qu’aux institutions médicales et aux défenseurs de l’Ukraine.

Depuis 27 ans, le groupe est l’un des principaux représentants de la musique ukrainienne moderne pour le monde entier. Okean Elzy a aidé l’Ukraine à travers les différentes périodes de son histoire, notamment pendant les plus difficiles. Le chanteur principal, Svyatoslav Vakarchuk, participe activement à des projets caritatifs et sociaux. Avec d’autres membres du groupe, il a soutenu la campagne des droits de l’homme de l’OIM et de MTV Europe « Les gens ne sont pas à vendre », est devenu ambassadeur honoraire de la culture en Ukraine et a été nommé ambassadeur de bonne volonté du programme de développement des Nations unies. Aujourd’hui, il soutient les Ukrainiens pendant la guerre avec la Russie, se produisant dans les gares, les camps de réfugiés, les tranchées et les unités militaires.

Together with other members of the band, he supported the human rights campaign of IOM and MTV Europe “People are not for sale”, became Honored Ambassador of Culture in Ukraine, and was appointed goodwill ambassador of the United Nations Development Program. Now he supports Ukrainians during the war with Russia, performing at train stations, in refugee camps, in trenches and military units.

Okean Elzy is one of the most popular Ukrainian rock bands, known far beyond the borders of their native country. Their music unites, and the unique sound and strong lyrics penetrates the depths of the soul. Andy Shauf à l’Olympia

Norm, le huitième album de l’auteur-compositeur-interprète Andy Shauf, est un arc chatoyant avec des silences troublants qui complètent son histoire, le pop et le sifflement d’une aiguille sur une platine après la fin de la chanson, le vide comme une trappe vers quelque chose de tendre et de terrifiant.

Avec Norm, il a bouleversé ses méthodes d’écriture, créant un univers profondément obsédant et imprévisible. C’est une prémisse classique chez Shauf que de se demander si nous sommes voués à la déception et à la douleur lorsque les gens ne nous aiment pas comme nous le voudrions. Mais cette fois-ci, il va plus loin. De nombreux morceaux de Norm commencent par être délicats et lugubres, à la manière des torch songs classiques. Au milieu d’une ligne, la voix de Shauf passe inopinément à un registre plus aigu et plaintif.

Ali Amran à l’Olympia

S’il puise sa source dans sa Kabylie natale, Ali Amran distille un savant mélange de genres qui fait l’originalité de sa musique. Au chant et à la guitare acoustique, il aborde un style dépouillé, sans fioriture. Ses chansons à textes, comme son sens mélodique, véhiculent l’âme d’une culture trop souvent bâillonnée ; ses compositions, quant à elles, empruntent leur rythmique à l’univers folk rock, avec des accents tantôt blues tantôt pop. En résulte une harmonie toute particulière, à l’image de sa voix, au timbre doux et profond.

Ali Amran a aujourd’hui conquis un large public, de même que la reconnaissance de ses pairs, à l’instar d’Idir, Abranis, ou encore Takfarinas, qui inscrivent sa démarche artistique, comme un souffle nouveau, dans l’histoire de la chanson kabyle.

If he draws his source from his native Kabylia, Ali Amran distils a skilful mix of genres which makes the originality of his music. On vocals and acoustic guitar, he approaches a stripped-down style, without embellishment. His text songs, like his melodic sense, convey the soul of a culture too often muzzled; his compositions, for their part, borrow their rhythm from the folk rock universe, with accents sometimes blues sometimes pop. The result is a very special harmony, like her voice, with its soft and deep timbre.

Ali Amran has now conquered a large audience, as well as the recognition of his peers, like Idir, Abranis, or even Takfarinas, who inscribe his artistic approach, like a new breath, in the history of the Kabyle song.
