Bantü Salsa

Those who are already crazy about Cameroonian musicians Richard Bona and Blick Bassy are guaranteed to trip out on Bantü Salsa! The March 11 performance at Lion d’Or is the first official release of this groove-obsessed octet, which brings together seven nationalities (a possible record even by Montreal’s standard of multi-ethnic crosspollination). It’s also the launch of an eponymous debut album of ten original compositions with “all the best to come from the streets”, as Zebda would say. The album also features an steaming hot brass section, a real Mandingo kora played by an authentic Malian and, in the role of the leader who gives it his all, the excellent bassist and singer Just Wôan, a native of Yaoundé.

Mara Tremblay

A national champion at combining rock, vintage pop and kebamericana, our Mara Tremblay released the album Cassiopée in 2017, so what’s in store for these concerts at Maison de la culture Maisonneuve and Centre communautaire d’Anjou? In March 2020, do we have the right to expect a new repertoire, or at least a foretaste of a new cycle of creation? It’s said to be a show in honour of International Women’s Day (March 8) and “focused on her new album”. Let the fans take it as a given!

La Nef

This programme sheds particular light on the nyckelharpa, a traditional Swedish instrument through which one can discover the kinship between Irish and Swedish traditional music, as well as the music of the Baroque period. Original arrangements of works by the Irish composer Turlough O’Carolan (1670-1738) and traditional Swedish music will be performed. La Nef’s approach, which has been in play since the 1990s, is based on the blending of cultures, styles and periods. It draws its inspiration from early, antique and oral-tradition music, but it also makes room for more recent or downright contemporary music.

Lary Kidd

Two years after Contrôle, MC Lary Kidd released Surhomme, 12 pieces of his own with a plethora of bricolage beats concocted in concert with his buddies Ruffsound and Ajust. So life goes on, Lary Kidd continues his career without Loud, former teammate and close friend who has of course become a keb rap superstar. Less painful and tortured than the poetic material on Contrôle, Surhomme is stuffed with double entendres and metaphorical punch. His thoughts and observations are gathered from the trials and tribulations of everyday life. The trivialization of his own misery has made him stronger, more resistant, even almost unfeeling… hence the choice of the word “superman”. Will he fly over the Club Soda stage?

(CANCELLED) Leaf

Leaf is a Montreal jazz quartet. After the release of an eponymous, self-produced album in September 2017, the ensemble returns to the stage to offer a modern, melodic, consonant, harmonically rich kind of jazz that draws from the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s, with a light, contemporary touch. At least, that’s one gets from a recording released two and a half years ago. Things may have changed…

The MSO and The Gold Rush

Charlie Chaplin’s The Gold Rush is a masterpiece of humour and social critique about the famous Klondike era. This classic silent film is, of course, suitable for projection with live soundtrack in front of a live audience, and this is where the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Timothy Brock, comes into play. The American maestro is a specialist in music composed in the ’20s and ’30s, particularly designed for silent-film accompaniment, and it is precisely for his high skills in that area that he was recruited. Hop in the car… we’re off to the Yukon!

Jerez Le Cam Quartet: tango nuevo and more

Arriving in France in the ’90s, Argentine composer and pianist Gerardo Jerez Le Cam has seven albums under his belt, and collaborations including Gotan Project, Juan Jose Mosalini and Osvaldo Calo, among others. While remaining faithful to the modern tango, the master of which remains the late Astor Piazzolla, Le Cam (also) strives to integrate traditional classical music, modern jazz, and also gypsy music from Eastern Europe, even some traditional African music. That being said, the Argentine leader generally remains in the territory of tango nuevo, where he continues the work of his contemporaries and predecessors.
