This summer, the Piknic will be at home. Bad luck but good hearts: the team of the hottest electronic event of the year hasn’t given up and are offering a condensed formula of what could have been. So this Sunday, make some time for Montreal producer and DJ CRi, who will launch into a short, 90-minute set that you can follow here or here.

“Shaolin Vs. Wu Tang” live-stream hosted by RZA
Leaping out of the mists of time with a deadly flying kick, the 1983 Hong Kong movie Shaolin Vs. Wu Tang, directed by and starring that bald blizzard of fists Gordon Liu, is a classic of kung-fu kicking of ass on film. If the title is familiar, that’s because it’s also that of the fifth album, Wu-Tang Clan’s Raekwon. In fact, it’s where Wu-Tang originally got their name, and the foundation of their pop-cultural philosophy (and a few familiar samples!). This live-stream will be hosted by the sifu of Wu-Tang himself, RZA, accompanied by Dan Halsted, head programmer at the Hollywood Theatre. Expect a lot of insights, fun facts, and fight-scene assessments from what’s the first of hopefully many such streams at 36 Cinema, the film component of RZA and Mustafa Shaikh’s commercial empire, 36 Chambers.
Tickets are $10, the show gets going at 9:15 pm EST, right here.
Swallow the Sun – Acoustic Live
As their North American tour has been postponed until 2021, the Finnish band is offering a live acoustic concert from Sonic Pump Studios. In order to respect the rules of physical distance, only four of the six members of Swallow the Sun will be on stage: singer Mikko Kotamaki, keyboardist and singer Jaani Peuhu, drummer Juuso Raatkainen and guitarist and keyboardist Juho Raivio. They will answer questions from the audience between songs, and the performance will be available for seven days after its initial broadcast.
Steve Reich: Six Pianos (At Home)
The American monarch of minimalism, Steve Reich, began with the idea of a work to be performed on all the pianos in a piano store, at the same time. Perhaps unable to secure the requisite 1,000 monkeys, he settled on a work for just a half-dozen uprights. 1973’s Six Pianos remains a key composition in the minimalist movement, a light but invigorating marvel of phase shifting and hypnotic patterns.
The esteemed techno label Kompakt is collaborating with Cologne Culture Stream to present a live-stream of Reich’s piece, performed remotely by German pianists Gregor Schwellenbach, Erol Sarp, Daniel Brandt, Paul Frick, and Kai Schumacher, with Canada’s own John Kameel Farah completing the half-dozen. It’s a reprise, exactly four years to the day after their joint premiere at the Cologne Philharmonie in 2016.
For Eastern Canadian readers: the performance begins at 1pm EST. It will be followed by an online video chat with the pianists… should be fun.
BXBW: Idles, Pussy Riot, Massive Attack, Fever 333, Citizen, Cherry Glazerr, HEALTH, Grandson, Sir Sly, Against the Current and more
In light of the shutdown of countless festivals and other events on a global scale due to the coronavirus pandemic, Courier Club is organizing an online music festival through the video game Minecraft. Block By Blockwest: A Minecraft Music Festival will provide users a unique, interactive music, arts and gaming experience to help break the tedium of the current global quarantine.
The festival will aim to unite performers, artists and fans as they collectively play games, partake in “live” shows, view various pieces and installations from up-and-coming artists and even purchase merchandise from their favorite performers through an interactive online merch tent. The festival can be attended through the Java edition of Minecraft. Users will login, select the Multiplayer option and type in “fest.blockbyblockwest.com” for the server address. Once they visit that server they are in the festival. Those who don’t have access to a Minecraft account can still enjoy live streams of all performances, including audio, through the Block By Blockwest website, Twitch, YouTube or Facebook. Performers will include Russian punk rockers Pussy Riot, Idles, Massive Attack, Fever 333, Citizen, Cherry Glazerr, HEALTH, Grandson, Sir Sly, Against the Current, Wicca Phase Springs Eternal, The Wrecks, Enjoy, Sports Team, Your Smith, Riz La Vie, Phil Good, Billy Lemos, Mood Killer, Fashion Jackson, Rich People, Los Shadows and many more. In many ways, the festival will function as something akin to South By Southwest, but within the confines of a video game, adding a gaming component to the music, arts and culture elements inherent with the annual SXSW experience. All proceeds from the April 25 event will go to CDC’s Coronavirus Emergency Response Fund.
