Dawn Tyler Watson Blues Trio au Upstairs

La compositrice-interprète lauréate d’un prix Juno Dawn Tyler Watson a gagné sa place parmi l’élite internationale du blues.

Elle a adopté Montréal comme maison après avoir obtenu son baccalauréat en études jazz et théâtre de l’Université Concordia.

Depuis lors, sa présence sur scène ardente et ses performances émouvantes lui ont valu une reconnaissance nationale et mondiale avec de nombreux prix, dont les Maple Blues Awards pour l’auteur-compositeur, le meilleur album, la chanteuse de l’année et une nomination de 2020 à la blues américaine pour la chanteuse de l’année aux côtés de grands noms comme Curtis Salgado et Mavis Staples.

Son dernier album «Mad Love» vient de recevoir le prix JUNO 2020 du meilleur album de blues de l’année.

Juno Award-winning Singer-Songwriter Dawn Tyler Watson has earned her place among the International Blues elite. She adopted Montreal as her home after earning her BFA in Jazz Studies and Theatre from Concordia University.

Since then, her fiery stage presence and soul-stirring performances have garnered her national and world-wide recognition with multiple awards including Maple Blues Awards for Songwriter, Best Album, Female Vocalist of the Year, and a 2020 American Blues Music Nomination for Vocalist of the Year alongside greats like Curtis Salgado & Mavis Staples.

Her latest record “Mad Love,” was just awarded the 2020 JUNO award for Blues Album of the Year.

Dans les chants et les gestes rituels, le spectacle révèle le rôle clé que peuvent jouer les artistes pour sensibiliser l’auditoire aux enjeux environnementaux et politiques actuels.

Faced with climate change, a challenge: do without natural resources and use her body to produce the electricity for her show.

On a bicycle attached to a battery, Mykalle pedals to sing. But her exhaustion mirrors the planet’s and the artist must question her overconsumption to avoid overheating.

Athletic performance, manifesto, concert and meditation, Warm up explores the degrowth required to rebuild our connection to nature and energy.

The piece invites us to come together and offers a reflection on the deeper meaning of commitment, living together and the role of the artist.

Salué par la critique comme un « prince au budget très réduit », Donny Benét est le neveu préféré de ses oncles Giorgio Moroder, Alan Vega et Michael McDonald. Résidant à Sydney, en Australie, Benét écrit, joue et enregistre entièrement lui-même dans les célèbres Donnyland Studios. Des synthétiseurs vintage, des boîtes à rythmes et des basses lancinantes sont utilisés exclusivement pour présenter les points de vue de Benét sur la vie, l’amour et les relations à travers le pouvoir de la chanson.

Hailed and panned by critics as “Prince on a serious budget cut” Donny Benét is best described as the favourite nephew to Uncles Giorgio Moroder, Alan Vega and Michael McDonald. Residing in Sydney, Australia, Benét writes, performs and records entirely by himself at the renowned Donnyland Studios. Vintage synthesisers, drum machines and throbbing bass are used exclusively to present Benét’s views on life, love and relationships through the power of song.

Pour son deuxième concert de la série Cartes blanches, Pro Musica présente le pianiste Serhiy Salov en récital avec le Quatuor à cordes Pro Musica. Instrumentiste de renommée internationale, la carrière de Serhiy Salov l’a conduit en Belgique, en Allemagne, en France, en Italie, au Japon, au Canada, au Royaume-Uni, en Chine et en Ukraine. Il a donné des concerts avec les Berliner Symphoniker, le Hallé Orchestra, l’Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, l’Orchestre national de Radio France, l’Orchestre philharmonique royal de Liverpool, l’Orchestre philharmonique royal, et l’Orchestre symphonique de Tokyo. Créé à l’initiative de Pro Musica, le quatuor est formé de Marie Bégin et Abby Walsh au violon, Cynthia Blanchon à l’alto ainsi que de Noémie Raymond-Friset au violoncelle.

For its second concert in the Cartes blanches series, Pro Musica presents pianist Serhiy Salov in recital with the Pro Musica String Quartet. An internationally renowned instrumentalist, Serhiy Salov’s career has taken him to Belgium, Germany, France, Italy, Japan, Canada, the United Kingdom, China and Ukraine. He has performed with the Berliner Symphoniker, the Hallé Orchestra, the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, the Orchestre national de Radio France, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra. Created at the initiative of Pro Musica, the quartet is composed of Marie Bégin and Abby Walsh on violin, Cynthia Blanchon on viola and Noémie Raymond-Friset on cello.

Né à Donezk, en Ukraine, Serhiy Salov a suivi, parallèlement à ses études de piano, une formation approfondie en composition et en musicologie qui influence souvent ses interprétations. Il est d’ailleurs reconnu pour ses transcriptions pour piano d’œuvres symphoniques, telles Casse-noisette de Tchaïkovski, Nocturnes de Debussy, Une nuit sur le mont Chauve de Moussorgski et plusieurs autres. Serhiy Salov débute ses études en musique en Ukraine et poursuit à Londres, où il obtient une maîtrise à la Guildhall School of Music and Drama, En 2007, afin de suivre des études supplémentaires auprès de Jean Saulnier, le jeune Ukrainien partit vivre au Canada où il avait déjà remporté en 2004 le Concours musical international de Montréal où il obtient un doctorat de l’Université de Montréal. Il reçut en outre le premier prix aux concours internationaux de piano de Dudley (2000) et d’Épinal (2004), le deuxième prix au concours Gina Bachauer (2010) et au concours mondial de piano de Cincinnati (2012) ainsi que le troisième prix aux concours Long-Thibaud (2001), Hamamatsu (2003) et Top of the World de Tromsø (2009). En mai 2014, Serhiy Salov a remporté le prix d’improvisation Richard Lupien, créé par le Concours musical international de Montréal. En plus de participer régulièrement aux festivals les plus prestigieux, il a reçu plusieurs prix dans divers concours internationaux.

Born in Donezk, Ukraine, Serhiy Salov’s extensive training in composition and musicology, in addition to his piano studies, often influences his performances. He is known for his transcriptions for piano of symphonic works such as Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker, Debussy’s Nocturnes, Mussorgsky’s A Night on Bald Mountain and many others. Serhiy Salov began his musical studies in Ukraine and continued in London, where he obtained a Master’s degree at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. In 2007, in order to pursue further studies with Jean Saulnier, the young Ukrainian moved to Canada where he had already won the Montreal International Music Competition in 2004 and where he obtained a doctorate from the University of Montreal. D. from the University of Montreal. He also won first prize at the Dudley (2000) and Épinal (2004) International Piano Competitions, second prize at the Gina Bachauer Competition (2010) and at the Cincinnati World Piano Competition (2012), and third prize at the Long-Thibaud (2001), Hamamatsu (2003), and Top of the World competitions in Tromsø (2009) In May 2014, Serhiy Salov won the Richard Lupien Improvisation Prize, created by the Montreal International Music Competition. In addition to regularly participating in the most prestigious festivals, he has received several awards in various international competitions.

Riopelle symphonique à la Place des Arts

Présenté dans le cadre des célébrations du centenaire de Jean Paul Riopelle et de Montréal en lumière, le spectacle multimédia Riopelle symphonique invite le public à plonger au cœur de l’œuvre de l’artiste, au rythme d’une création musicale signée Serge Fiori et Blair Thomson, interprétée par l’Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, sous la direction d’Adam Johnson, et les Chœurs des Petits Chanteurs de Laval dirigés par Philippe Ostiguy et le chœur Temps Fort.

Conjuguant projections et scénographie audacieuse, le spectacle en cinq actes évoque les grandes périodes de la vie de l’artiste et de sa fructueuse carrière échelonnée sur sept décennies. Symbole de liberté et infatigable oiseau migrateur, l’emblématique oie sauvage guide le public à travers les lieux réels et imaginaires fréquentés par Riopelle, témoin privilégié de son geste créateur et de son inépuisable capacité de se réinventer. La direction artistique est signée par Nicolas Lemieux.

As part of the celebrations to mark the 100th anniversary of Jean Paul Riopelle’s birth, Riopelle symphonique takes audiences on a stunning multimedia odyssey through the artist’s works and inspirations. Set to the original music of Serge Fiori and Blair Thomson, the concert features the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, the Chœur des Petits Chanteurs de Laval and the Temps Fort choir under conductor Adam Johnson.

Riopelle symphonique combines original musical composition with discovery as we revisit the works that marked the artist’s illustrious career. Together, the musical creation and visual environments evoke key periods in the artist’s life, from his early experimentations in Montréal to the closing chapter of his career—a time marked by his return to ‘the source’ (Isle-aux-Grues)—by way of post-war France, his encounters with Indigenous peoples and his deep connection with the Far North.

Visual concept and staging are by Marcella Grimaux (Noisy Head) under artistic director Nicolas Lemieux. An ingenious assembly of LED screens, whose varied sizes and configurations nod to the diverse formats of the master’s paintings, lets audiences both witness and be part of Riopelle’s creative gestures and inexhaustible capacity for reinvention.

Experimental rock trio Yoo Doo Right (Montreal, CA) combines melodic and noisy guitar notes, doctored synthesizer patterns, fleshed-out bass lines and calculated percussive outbursts to create a powerful wall of sound. In their experimental approach, the band skillfully combines elements of shoegaze, post-rock, and psychedelia, and builds a sound that is akin to a “slow-motion traffic accident.

 Michel Donato est un contrebassiste qui a un parcours des plus intéressant. On ne connaît guère Michel Donato, chez nous, que par ses disques et ses tournées avec la chanteuse Karen Young ou le bassiste d’Uzeb, Alain Caron. Au Canada, par contre, Donato, c’est une institution! Avec ses propres formations comme son quintet ou en duo avec James Gelfand, ses expérimentation avec Henri Texier et Charlie Haden, l’excellence et la passion son toujours au rendez-vous ! 

Michel Donato is a double bass player with a very interesting background. In Canada, Michel Donato is known only for his records and tours with singer Karen Young and Uzeb bassist Alain Caron. In Canada, on the other hand, Donato is an institution! With his own formations like his quintet or in duet with James Gelfand, his experiments with Henri Texier and Charlie Haden, excellence and passion are always present!
