Sam Kirmayer & Willie Jones III au Upstairs

Avec un style d’expression rythmique inégalé, le batteur Willie Jones III est l’un des plus grands batteurs de jazz au monde. Jones a été membre du Quintet de Roy Hargrove et figure sur les CD de Roy Hargrove parus chez Verve : Moment To Moment, Hard Groove, Nothing Serious et Rh Factor’s Distractions. On peut entendre Jones sur une multitude d’enregistrements, dont Night Moves de Kurt Elling (Concord), nominé aux Grammy Awards, et Here d’Eric Reed (Max Jazz). Jones a travaillé avec Sonny Rollins, Ernestine Anderson, Bobby Hutcherson, Wynton Marsalis, Cedar Walton, Frank Wess, le Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Big Band, Houston Person, Billy Childs, Eric Reed, Ryan Kisor, Eric Alexander, Bill Charlap, Michael Brecker, Herbie Hancock et Hank Jones. En 2000, Jones a publié son premier CD, Vol 1… Straight Swingin’, sur son propre label, WJ3 Records. Il a ensuite publié Vol II… Don’t Knock The Swing (2002), Volume III (2007) et WE 2 (2008), un enregistrement pour trombone et piano avec Wycliffe Gordon et Eric Reed. Le dernier album de Jones s’intitule The Next Phase (2010). Le guitariste et compositeur Sam Kirmayer joue avec ” intrépidité et élan ” – Katie Malloch (CBC Jazz Beat & Tonic). Montréal / Nouvelles Musiques : De Tremblay à Feldman, visages de la spiritualité

Ce concert est né de conversations entre Simon Bertrand et Isak Goldschneider à propos d’une ligne conceptuelle découlant d’un déplacement de la pensée spirituelle du collectif vers l’individuel. Tremblay représente la spiritualité comme un phénomène communautaire et religieux et, au pôle opposé, Feldman pour qui c’est une expression individuelle et indicible. Entre les deux, une œuvre de Simon Bertrand fait écho au bouddhisme zen alors qu’une des pièces emblématiques d’Arvo Pärt complète ce panorama plein de ferveur mystique.

This concert is born from conversations between Simon Bertrand and Isak Goldschneider around a conceptual line resulting from a shift in spiritual thought from the collective to the individual. Tremblay represents spirituality as a community and religious phenomenon and, at the opposite pole, Feldman for whom it is an individual and unspeakable expression. In between, a work by Simon Bertrand echoes Zen Buddhism, while one of Arvo Pärt’s iconic pieces completes this panorama rife with mystical fervour.

Eli Davidovici à la Casa del Popolo : Lancement d’album

Eli Davidovici se produit en tant que bassiste professionnel sur les scènes de jazz, de rock, de folk et de hip-hop de Vancouver et de Montréal depuis 2006 et enseigne en privé et dans des masterclasses de groupe depuis plus d’une décennie. Depuis l’obtention de son diplôme en performance jazz de l’Université Capilano en 2014, Eli a passé la majorité de son temps en tant qu’auteur et producteur de sa propre musique, en plus de travailler avec des musiciens à travers le pays.

Eli Davidovici has been performing as a professional bassist in the Vancouver and Montreal Jazz, Rock, Folk, and Hip Hop scenes since 2006 and has been teaching both privately and in group masterclasses for over a decade. Since obtaining his degree in Jazz performance from Capilano University in 2014, Eli has spent the majority of his time as a writer and producer of his own music, as well as working with musicians across the country and across scenes.

Yannick Rieu Quartet joue Sonny Rollins

Yannick Rieu propose une soirée axée autour du saxophoniste et compositeur Sonny Rollins. Le répertoire se présentera sous la forme d’un survol des compositions de Rollins allant des années 50 à celles des années 80 et 90. Rollins en constante recherche a su évoluer et diversifier ses champs d’investigations au cours de sa longue carriere. Compositeur, il a écrit plusieurs thèmes devenus des standards de jazz que tout bon étudiant doit connaître aujourd’hui. Du be-bop au calypso en passant par le hard-bop ou encore le free-jazz, Yannick Rieu brosse un tableau du maître par une vue d’ensemble de son répertoire. À ne pas manquer!

Yannick Rieu proposes an evening centered around the saxophonist and composer Sonny Rollins. The repertoire will be presented in the form of an overview of Rollins’ compositions from the 50s to the 80s and 90s. Rollins has been constantly searching for ways to evolve and diversify throughout his long career. As a composer, he wrote several themes that have become jazz standards that every good student should know today. From be-bop to calypso, hard-bop to free-jazz, Yannick Rieu paints a picture of the master through an overview of his repertoire. Not to be missed!

Canadian Jazz Collective au Dièse Onze

Le Canadian Jazz Collective est un groupe nouvellement créé d’artistes de jazz canadiens établis et primés, qui adopte une approche collaborative de la présentation du jazz canadien original sur le marché international. Le répertoire du collectif comprend des compositions originales du saxophoniste Kirk MacDonald et du trompettiste Derrick Gardner, ainsi que des œuvres du guitariste Lorne Lofsky, l’un des héros méconnus de la scène jazz canadienne, toutes spécialement arrangées pour cet ensemble.

The Canadian Jazz Collective is a newly created group of established and Award-Winning Canadian jazz artists, which takes a collaborative approach to the presentation of original Canadian jazz on the international market. The Collective’s repertoire consists of original compositions from saxophonist Kirk MacDonald, and trumpeter Derrick Gardner, and also the works of guitarist Lorne Lofsky, one of the unsung heroes on the Canadian jazz scene – all specially arranged for this ensemble.

This Ottawa-based piano and percussion duo is renowned for its virtuosity, intensity and a repertoire which is both cutting edge and accessible. This concert offers a unique journey through reflections on the nature of creativity, meditation, the afterlife and… Scotch whisky! The Spirits also celebrates strong, bold sounds and is the result of years of collaboration with some of Canada’s most creative voices.

Salle Bourgie: Les Idées heureuses, carte blanche à Dorothéa Ventura

Suite au succès de sa première édition, le concert Chaconne et chocolat nous plonge à nouveau dans l’univers envoutant de la chaconne mais cette fois-ci, en Italie au 17e siècle. La chaconne, danse très prisée pendant plusieurs siècles, fascine par la simplicité de sa composition : un motif de basse continuellement répété tout le long de l’œuvre, de façon presque hypnotisante, sur laquelle viennent se poser une ou plusieurs voix qui peuvent ainsi fleurir, discourir ou être improvisées. En Italie, la chaconne sera marquée du sceau de la virtuosité extrême de ces voix supérieures.

Magnifiant cette forme musicale offrant tant de possibilités expressives, le concert Chaconne et chocolat : délectations italiennes propose une suite de chaconnes vocales et instrumentales, regroupées par thèmes, faisant place à la créativité et virtuosité débordantes des interprètes… une soirée de pur plaisir!

Et pourquoi le chocolat ? Tous ceux qui ont goûté à la chaconne connaissent la difficulté de se résoudre à ce qu’elle se termine, tel un chocolat qui fond. Gâterie suivant la délectation, des chocolats proposés au public à la fin du concert prolongeront l’expérience de concert.

Following the success of its first edition, the Chaconne and Chocolate concert plunges us once again into the captivating universe of chaconne, but this time in 17th century Italy. For several centuries, the chaconne remained most popular and fascinated many through the simplicity of its composition. A bass motif repeats continuously throughout the performance, in an almost hypnotic way, on which one or more voices come to rest and thus come to blossom, discourse or improvised. In Italy, the chaconne is marked by the virtuosity of these superior voices.

Amplifying this musical into offering so many expressive possibilities, the concert Chaconne and Chocolate: Italian delights offers a suite of vocal and instrumental chaconnes, grouped by theme, giving way to the overflowing creativity and virtuosity of the performers… an evening of pure pleasure!

But why chocolate? Anyone who has tasted the chaconne knows the difficulty of bringing it to an end, similar to melting chocolate. Little chocolat delights will follow the magic performance, to prolong the concert experience.

Les mardis big band avec Benjamin Deschamps au Dièse Onze

Benjamin Deschamps est un saxophoniste et compositeur reconnu par ses pairs de la scène canadienne de jazz, mais également par l’industrie culturelle. Il a entre autres été nommé « Révélation Radio-Canada Jazz » en 2017-2018, puis a remporté le Grand Prix TD du Festival international de Jazz de Montréal en 2019. Son esprit grégaire l’amène à collaborer avec plusieurs ensembles tels le Rachel Therrien Quintet, Odd Lot (Jacques Kuba Séguin), le Joe Sullivan Big Band, L’Orchestre National de Jazz de Montréal et le JazzLab Orchestra (Effendi) avant de plonger tête première dans ses projets de composition. Du trio au sextet, il joue avec des géométries variables pour donner la couleur plus adéquate à chaque œuvre. Deschamps s’est établi comme un incontournable de la scène jazz canadienne avec ses 3 premiers albums. Il a présenté sa musique avec succès aux quatre coins du Canada, faisant la tournée de plusieurs festivals de jazz au pays et en France.

It was through his classical music background that Benjamin Deschamps discovered jazz to finally make it his own. Although he cumulates artistic mediums (he is a flutist, clarinetist and arranger), it is his talents as a saxophonist and composer that have put him in the spotlight. His gregarious spirit led him to collaborate with several ensembles such as the Rachel Therrien Quintet, Odd Lot (Jacques Kuba Séguin), the Joe Sullivan Big Band, the Orchestre national de jazz de Montréal and JazzLab Orchestra (Effendi) before diving headfirst into his own projects. From trio to sextet, he plays with variable ensemble sizes to give the most fitting touch to each work.Benjamin is recognized by his peers in the Canadian jazz scene, but also by the cultural industry. He was named “Révélation jazz Radio-Canada” in 2017-2018, and won the TD Grand Prize at the Festival international de Jazz de Montréal in 2019.
