The Festival International de Jazz is back again this year for its 44th edition!

From June 27 to July 6, 2024, the « Entrée Libre TD » series presented by TD Bank offers a lineup of Jazz artists in a variety of styles, all free of charge at the TD Studio.

PODIUM 2024: the must-see !

PODIUM 2024 will bring together hundreds of delegates and thousands of  singers, spectators from across the country and beyond, passionate about collective singing.This vast choral happening will take place from May 16 to 19, 2024 in Montreal and will also be accessible online. Held every 2 years since 1982, each PODIUM has been shaped by the many voices that come together to plan, sing and share their knowledge in the host city where congress participants and the public gather. PODIUM 2024 is presented by Canada Choral and Alliance chorale du Québec.

Here are the must-see concerts in its program!

Thursday, May 16 at 5 p.m.

Christ Church Cathedral

Cultural Landscapes : Vocal ensembles Babεl (Elaine Choi) from Toronto, ON, Coroncoro Ensamble Vocal (Ana Paulina Alvarez) from Bogotá, Colombia and Concreamus (Kai Leung) from Toronto, ON will share the stage in this PODIUM 2024 opening concert.

Thursday, May 16, 8 p.m.

Saint-Andrew & Saint-Paul Church – 3415 Redpath Street, Montreal, H3G 2G2

Héritages : The National Youth Choir of Canada (NYCC) 2024, a project of Canada Choral, brings together 31 of the finest young choristers aged 19 to 26 from across Canada and will conclude its concert tour by presenting Héritages, under the musical and artistic direction of choral conductor Roseline Blain. The repertoire will feature numerous French-language works, from Clément Janequin to Robert Ingari, via Gabriel Fauré, Francis Poulenc and Claude Champagne. This will be an opportunity to hear the premiere of two new works by Quebec composers Ana Sokolović and Katia Makdissi-Warren.  Even Jean-Pierre Ferland, who has just left us, will be on the program!

Where the heart is : Chroma Vocal Ensemble (Mitchell Pady) of Toronto, Ont., Proximus 5 of Winnipeg, Man. and Toronto Northern Lights (Andrew Carolan) of Toronto, Ont. will share the stage.

Ahskennon’nia : Songs of peace: Ahskennon’nia, which means “peace” in the Huron-Wendat language, is the musical starting point for this Aboriginal collaboration featuring Andrée Levesque Sioui (Wendat singer-songwriter), Deantha Edmunds (Inuk soprano), Alex Vollant (Innu baritone and pianist), the Choeur des enfants de Montréal (Eun Jung Park), the vocal ensemble musica Intima, with Sherryl Sewepagaham (Cree composer-performer) as artistic director of the concert. 

Ahskennon’nia will feature Aboriginal compositions by Sherryl Sewpagaham and Andrew Balfour (Cree). This will be an opportunity to hear the world premiere of a new Aboriginal choral work, commissioned for PODIUM 2024. In the spirit of reconciliation through song, this work, composed and directed by Andrée Levesque Sioui, in an arrangement by Andrew Balfour, will be heard during the concert finale. The work will be performed by the artists, choirs and Aboriginal collaborators involved in Ahskennon’nia.

Éveil et liberté : The Chœur des Jeunes de Laval (Philippe Ostiguy) from Laval (QC), the Chœur Adleisia (Megan Batty and Virginie Pacheco) from Montreal (QC) and the Holy Heart Chamber Choir (Robert Colbourne) from St. John’s (NL) will share the stage for this concert.

Lift Every Voice : from African-American spirituals to hip-hop will bring together the Nathaniel Dett Chorale, directed by Brainerd Blyden-Taylor, and the Jireh Gospel Choir, directed by Carol Bernard, to mark the end of the UN International Decade of People of African Descent. The concert will feature the diverse and significant contributions of people of African descent to choral music, including Sydney Guillaume, Evelyn Simpson Cureton and Christopher Ducasse, who will conduct his own compositions.

Chants d’appel et de liaisons : For the closing concert of this edition, the PODIUM 2024 Festival offers an exceptional intercultural dialogue conceived and directed by André Pappathomas bringing together Quebec artists : four Quebec choirs from different cultural communities, Canticorum (Latin America), Singiza (Rwanda), La Muse (Romania) and Haïti chante et danse (Haiti), four classical solo singers, a Quebec folk trio and a trio of musicians (violin, cello and vibraphone/percussion) will take part in a multidisciplinary event where the music that binds voices and hearts together will be the main thread.

The concert program will unfold around a principle of directed improvisation for vocal ensemble, which Pappathomas has developed over the years. Thus, the opening piece, the finale and the links between the performances of each choir will be approached in the form of controlled improvisation.

Les Hay Babies au Club Soda

Et qui dit  » Acadie  » dit « bon temps ». Sur scène, Julie, Katrine et Vivianne dégagent une énergie contagieuse grâce aux histoires comiques et touchantes de leur dernier album. Elles créent une ambiance à la fois festive et introspective, pleine de sourires, d’écoute et d’émotions. Les Hay Babies ne se contentent pas de divertir, elles créent une connexion authentique avec leur public en l’invitant à connaître davantage les récits et les rythmes de leurs chez eux, une chanson à la fois.

The Hay Babies’ live show is a spellbinding experience where rock meets the folk soul of Acadia. This show is about celebration, country rock and sincerity. With their guitars, iconic costumes and vocal harmonies, they take the audience on a musical journey through the rich soundscapes of the regions they love so much. Festival Classica: Fauré et Dubois au siècle dernier

Le Chœur philharmonique du Nouveau Monde – Montréal est ravi de vous convier à son concert in memoriam présenté par les chœurs et l’orchestre de la Société philharmonique du Nouveau Monde. Solistes, choristes et musiciens sauront vous offrir, comme toujours, un grand concert sous la direction artistique habile et inspirante de Michel Brousseau, reconnu pour ses interprétations vibrantes et intenses.

Au programme, la Messe solennelle de saint Remi de Théodore Dubois, le célèbre Requiem de Gabriel Fauré, considéré comme l’un des plus beaux requiem du XIXe siècle, ainsi que le Cantique de Jean Racine, du même compositeur. Un moment grandiose à venir!

Festival Classica: Piazzolla de New York à Paris

L’imaginaire collectif s’envole vers Buenos Aires à l’écoute du nom de Piazzolla. Mais ce musicien révolutionnaire et controversé nous offre mille surprises, depuis son enfance à New York entouré de jazz au retour à en Argentine, où il se démarque en tant qu’interprète chevronné. Son départ vers la France, pour s’éloigner de son tango, mène à un surprenant revirement de situation, lorsque la grande Nadia Boulanger lui indique que sa voix est dans un tango nouveau, à l’écoute de ces influences. Et ce sont tous ces éléments qui nous mènent au génie d’un des musiciens les plus connus de l’histoire.

Piano, violoncelle et marimba/vibraphone; une combinaison instrumentale surprenante mais parfaite pour explorer ce répertoire tiré de la période française de Piazzolla et contrasté avec des standards jazz qui l’ont influencé, entre nostalgie, phrasé langoureux et rythme explosif.

When we hear the name Piazzolla, our collective imagination conjures up images of Buenos Aires. But this revolutionary and controversial musician offers us a thousand surprises, from his childhood in New York surrounded by jazz to his return to Argentina, where he made his mark as a seasoned performer. His departure for France, to get away from his tango, leads to a surprising turn of events, when the great Nadia Boulanger tells him that his voice is in a new tango, listening to these influences. And it’s all these elements that lead us to the genius of one of history’s best-known musicians.

Piano, cello and marimba/vibraphone; a surprising but perfect instrumental combination for exploring this repertoire drawn from Piazzolla’s French period and contrasted with the jazz standards that influenced him, between nostalgia, languorous phrasing and explosive rhythm.

Festival Classica: Hommage à Théodore Dubois

Sinfonia de Montréal vous invite à découvrir Théodore Dubois à l’occasion du 100e anniversaire de sa disparition. Compositeur, organiste et pédagogue français, il a marqué le paysage musical du 19e siècle par des points de vue et positions musicales particuliers. Tandis que le poème symphonique Adonis nous plonge dans les émotions de ce mythe grec tragique, la Fantaisie pour Harpe et Orchestre, interprétée par Juliette Duguay, nous offre un caractère enjoué et fantastique. Quant à la Symphonie Française, elle s’élève comme une odyssée patriotique à travers les paysages sonores variés de la France.

Sinfonia de Montréal invites you to discover Théodore Dubois on the 100th anniversary of his death. A French composer, organist and pedagogue, he left his mark on the 19th-century musical landscape with his own particular points of view and musical positions. While the symphonic poem Adonis plunges us into the emotions of this tragic Greek myth, the Fantaisie pour Harpe et Orchestre, performed by Juliette Duguay, offers us a playful and fantastic character. As for the Symphonie Française, it rises like a patriotic odyssey through the varied soundscapes of France.
