This lacklustre offering is plagued by a combination of uninspired songwriting, dull performances, and an overall sense that Yes have overstayed their welcome. Even for those who simply can\u2019t get enough, this should be a disheartening affair, but some will still rejoice that this is a better release than their last effort, <em>The Quest<\/em> (2021).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Ice Bridge\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/um6t8pPsdCs?list=PLSBWvYm8t6uZchHi0K7auAm0Uk4wD7boi\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">A look at the current formation of Yes draws to mind the parable of the Ship of Theseus. The group has gone through so many changes of personnel, that at this point the band is really unrecognisable. Save for guitarist Steve Howe, none of the original members are present here, and under Howe\u2019s direction it\u2019s as if the band is trying to replicate Yes\u2019 past success without truly understanding what made them exceptional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The album opens with \u201cCut from the Stars\u201d a number which harkens back to the glory days of old, bringing to mind albums like<em> Fragile <\/em>(1971) and <em>The Yes Album<\/em> (1969), but sounds much like it was produced by ChatGPT. In fact all the nine songs here feel like that &#8211; derivative and formulaic progressive rock with nothing whatsoever progressive about it. It\u2019s seem as if Howe can\u2019t be entirely to blame as current bassist Billy Sherwood and vocalist Jon Davison frequently take writing credits on <em>Mirror to the Sky.<\/em> While Davison does a commendable job replacing vocalist Jon Anderson, the resemblance of his voice to Anderson\u2019s only adds to the feeling that this band is a husk of what it used to be.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Cut from the Stars\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5WSqjH6mFhk?list=PLEpjZ6a3i26fQPaGgPqOK-Q5CpmzAwSqW\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The production further exacerbates the album&#8217;s shortcomings. Recorded during the Pandemic the sessions were recorded remotely and it suffers for it. The production feels as flat and completely uninspired as the songwriting and the once-vibrant and adventurous instrumentation feels stagnant. Most disappointing of all is the lack of energy and enthusiasm that pervades each cut, as though the band themselves don\u2019t have much conviction in what they are playing. Listen to \u201cMagic Potion\u201d and you will quickly see what I mean.&nbsp; Still, in spite of everything, maintains an acceptable quality, and while that \u2018acceptable\u2019 may be good for some, Yes are only tarnishing their name with each new release.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 100%; height: 120px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=4153407455\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=0687f5\/tracklist=false\/artwork=small\/transparent=true\/\" seamless><a href=\"https:\/\/mirrortothesky.bandcamp.com\/album\/mirror-to-the-sky\">Mirror To The Sky by Yes<\/a><\/iframe>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With the release of their twenty-third studio album, Mirror to The Sky, it might finally be time to say no to Yes.
