Mark Twain was once quoted saying , \u201cthe difference between the almost right word and the right word is really a large matter\u2014it’s the difference between the lightning bug and the lightning.\u201d <\/em>It\u2019s true. Finding the right word when describing a piece of music or band can, at times, be a challenge. Especially if you\u2019re looking for a new<\/em> word. It\u2019s an even more Herculean effort when it involves a band like Yo La Tengo.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yo La Tengo is an American indie rock back from Hoboken, New Jersey. Formed in 1984 by Ira Kaplan and Georgia Hubley, they\u2019ve been called, \u201cthe quintessential critics’ band.\u201d Recently, the band released their 17th studio album, and first full-length record, in five years, This Stupid World.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The word I\u2019ve seen attributed most to their music has been, \u2018Eclectic.\u2019 As a noun, an Eclectic is \u201cone who uses a method or approach that is composed of elements drawn from various sources.\u201d\u00a0 Well, on this album alone, Yo La Tengo has proven that description to be true.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The album opens with the driving rhythm section, the thumping bass lines, and aggressively distorted guitars of \u201cSinatra Drive Breakdown.\u201d They continue on this musical path through the next couple songs: \u201cFallout\u201d and \u201cTonight\u2019s Episode.\u201d But, midway through the album, there is a change in tone, and a change in vocalist, with the soft acoustic touch of \u201cAselestine.\u201d Finally, the album ends with the track, \u201cMiles Away.\u201d A seven-and-a-half minute soundscape, that\u2019s much more ambient and ethereal than the others. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before listening to This Stupid World<\/em>, I hadn\u2019t dived too deeply into Yo La Tengo\u2019s music, but this new album has given me a good primer and entry point into their eclectic world.\u00a0 And with a career that has spanned four decades, I\u2019m sure there\u2019s much more for me to discover. And maybe, just maybe, we\u2019ll find some more right words somewhere down the road.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
