While we have more often heard of synesthesia (a neurological phenomenon in which two or more senses are associated) between music and color, this is the first time I have been offered a link between musical sounds and tactile textures.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"SHSU Percussion Group - Velvet by Monica Pearce\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3LOG1Wwa6A4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The problem with this kind of proposal is that the perception of one (here the composer) may not make sense to the other (the listener). In this case, I effectively understand the ringing and luminous nature of <em>Chain Maille<\/em>, the protective metal shirt of medieval warriors. I also get a good sense of the dotted nature of <em>Houndstooth <\/em>and the floating softness of <em>Silks<\/em>. <em>Leather<\/em>, on the other hand, doesn&#8217;t seem lyrical enough. I would have imagined smoother, more organic sounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That said, if you make the effort to step back from the expectations raised by the textiles mentioned, you will notice a cycle of pieces for keyboard (piano or harpsichord) and percussion of great originality, with a wealth of stimulating soundscapes and exciting instrumental colors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether or not you try to perceive the degree of similarity between the textiles evoked and the music inspired by them, <em>Textile Fantasies<\/em> will take you on a journey into sound worlds that are as fascinating as they are curious and highly seductive.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 350px; height: 720px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=1426985223\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=0687f5\/transparent=true\/\" seamless=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/centrediscs.bandcamp.com\/album\/textile-fantasies-3\">Textile Fantasies by Monica Pearce<\/a><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With Textile Fantasies, Canadian composer Monica Pearce engages in an unusual exercise in artistic synesthesia.
