After opening the Shika Shika label sampler Querencia<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, released this past summer, drummer and producer Elodie Suzanne\u2014aka Dilo and, more recently, Eat My Butterfly\u2014gets reunited with her native R\u00e9union. It\u2019s a moment that\u2019s happy and also a bit haunted, a balmy musical postcard from the Indian Ocean. The four-song EP, supplemented with a pair of remixes, finds her applying her gentle and elegant downtempo touch to maloya, the \u201cother\u201d main local folk-music style of R\u00e9union alongside the more commonly familiar s\u00e9ga. Expect nimble and poignant melodies, subtle yet surprising rhythmic gestures, and generous use of the pik\u00e9r, an idiophone in the marimba family, and other site-specific instruments. Suzanne has also enlisted three R\u00e9unionese singers, each of whom, in the lovely local creole, brings additional character to their assigned track.
