It was while preparing to write the soundtrack for <em>Polytechnique: ce qu\u2019il reste du 6 d\u00e9cembre<\/em>, a documentary by Judith Plamondon, that Audet felt overwhelmed by the tragedy that she was familiar with, of course, but from afar, like so many others her age, more than 30 years after the fact. So strong, for her, was this encounter with the ghosts of a past that had become symbolic, that she went further, because she had to, i.e. the realization of <em>Les filles montagnes<\/em>, an autonomous album inspired by the tragedy and her own creative, almost cathartic reactions to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Les filles montagnes - Viviane Audet\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-sAWlvhUm-M?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s quite simple: Viviane is alone at the piano, or here and there on her old Wurlitzer 140B. The piano is emotional, but very discreet. The Wurlitzer, for its part, is like \u201ctime suspended after the shock\u201d, because of its nocturnal qualities. \u201cNostalgic with its deep tones and nervous tremolo,\u201d as Audet describes it in the kind description she emailed me.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Les filles montagnes<\/em> is a chiaroscuro opus. The narrative has something of a chronological nature and evolves from drama to hope, from darkness to light. But, beware! Everything is of an extrafine subtlety, like the almost invisible threads woven into a spider\u2019s seemingly fragile web.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI wanted light to be found in it as well, because one of the things that remains for me after my incursion into this drama&#8230; is all the light and beauty that those 14 girls left behind,\u201d Audet says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than anything else, I like Viviane\u2019s approach: melodies that are so economical that you sometimes have the impression of fragments. Snippets of memories perhaps, echoes of past spectres? It\u2019s more than plausible. The composer immersed herself in the collected testimonies of the witnesses and actors of the drama. She obviously heard their voices, soft, soothed, not at all shrill or vengeful, feeling, I imagine, loved and cherished, respected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/video.php?height=476&#038;href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FEntourageSpectacle%2Fvideos%2F1065027013845934%2F&#038;show_text=false&#038;width=476\" width=\"476\" height=\"476\" style=\"border:none;overflow:hidden\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowFullScreen=\"true\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Audet avoids certain clich\u00e9s of current &#8220;neoclassicism&#8221;, i.e. Philip Glass-style arpeggios and Einaudi-style amplitude. For her, everything is modest. It reminds me of Arvo P\u00e4rt\u2019s music (<em>F\u00fcr Alina<\/em> or <em>Spiegel im Spiegel<\/em>, for example), or of an aesthetic \u00e0 la Webern, but entirely tonal.
