This is not Pierre Lapointe\u2019s first holiday ritornello: he composed, wrote, and sang the timeless \u201cNo\u00ebl sans pluie\u201d for the benefit of the organization Jeunes musiciens du monde 15 years ago. This time, Pierre takes the Nativity on with a vengeance by screwing a collection of 11 originals entitled Chansons hivernales<\/em> (\u201cwinter songs\u201d) into our ears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He begins the festivities a bit caustically with \u201cChaque ann\u00e9e on y revient\u201d. The choir, credited as the Sour Pussies (!), sprinkles this tune composed by Julien Chiasson, alias Julyan, Hubert Lenoir\u2019s brother, with vocal powdered sugar. The Sour Pussies return on \u201cCe qu\u2019on sait d\u00e9j\u00e0\u201d, with the addition of delightful ornaments of saxophone, trombone, trumpet, violin, and theremin. Arrangements by Owen Pallett, performed by the FAME\u2019S Macedonian Symphonic Orchestra in Skopje, enhance the Aznavourian \u201cLe premier No\u00ebl de Jules\u201d. Pallett and the Macedonians put it again on \u201cSix heures d\u2019avion nous s\u00e9parent\u201d (a duet with the planetary minstrel Mika), \u201cL\u2019oiseau rare\u201d, \u201cUn No\u00ebl perdu dans Paris\u201d and \u201c\u00c7a va, j\u2019ai donn\u00e9\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One thus notes that Chansons hivernales<\/em> offers a blizzard of brand-name collaborators. Among the singers of the aforementioned choir are the indie singers Yuki Berthiaume-Tremblay, from Jesuslesfilles, and Dominic Berthiaume, from Corridor. The young wolf on the rise F\u00e9lix Dyotte wrote and composed \u201cToutes les couleurs\u201d with Lapointe and, speaking of wolves, the tasty half-creole, half-French \u201cNo\u00ebl Lougawou\u201d comes from the joint musical brains of M\u00e9lissa Laveaux and Pierre Lapointe. Emmanuel \u00c9thier, Quebec\u2019s hottest pop producer, occupied the captain\u2019s seat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chansons hivernales <\/em>ends with the intimate \u201cMaman, Papa\u201d, strongly reminiscent of \u201cMaman\u201d, the hidden song from Lapointe\u2019s eponymous 2004 album. So goes Pierre Lapointe, an enormously talented singer-songwriter from Quebec, creator of a work that blossoms between sweetness and pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
