{"id":22392,"date":"2020-06-20T11:32:33","date_gmt":"2020-06-20T15:32:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/panm360.com\/records\/roden-crater\/"},"modified":"2020-06-22T09:45:13","modified_gmt":"2020-06-22T13:45:13","slug":"roden-crater-arman-melies","status":"publish","type":"records","link":"https:\/\/panm360.com\/en\/records\/roden-crater-arman-melies\/","title":{"rendered":"Roden Crater"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2018, Arman M\u00e9li\u00e8s, master songwriter and doctor of cybergloomy ambiances, released <em>\u00c9chapp\u00e9es Belles Vol. 1<\/em>, a collection of successful covers by singer-songwriters Juliette Armanet, Fishbach, Blondino, and Maissiat. Here he is again with <em>Roden Crater,<\/em> an instrumental album (apart from a few lyrics on \u201cDans la m\u00eal\u00e9e\u201d), the first part of a trilogy inspired by American mythology that will also include <em>Basquiat&#8217;s Black Kingdom<\/em>, another instrumental opus expected this summer, and <em>Laurel Canyon<\/em>, an album of songs scheduled for January 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">M\u00e9li\u00e8s has been composing these nine tracks over the past two years, drawing inspiration from the work of James Turrell, an American artist \u2013 also a graduate in mathematics and psychology \u2013 who explores light and lives in Flagstaff, Arizona. In the 1970s, the Dia Art Foundation purchased, on behalf of Turrell, the land on which the Roden volcanic crater is located in the Arizona desert (hence the title of the album. Turrell transformed it into a gigantic light art installation-observatory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">M\u00e9li\u00e8s has had a lot of ideas since he hid behind the alias Gran Volcano \u2013 the title of one of the songs on the album &#8211; to do an instrumental performance in 2012, and one of the highlights of his album <em>Vertigone <\/em>(2015) is called \u201cLe volcan, m\u00eame\u201d. All of <em>Roden Crater<\/em>&#8216;s tracks were performed on analog or programmed synths, then recorded by M\u00e9li\u00e8s. Seb Fouble, half of the electro duo Remote, mixed the whole thing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some passages, including the first half of \u201cGran Volcano\u201d, remind us of the marmoreal feel of the album <em>Casino<\/em> (2008). From \u201cL&#8217;enfant qui marchait dans la couleur\u201d to \u201cThe Sun In a Hole Part II\u201d and \u201cFlagstaff\u201d, we feel like we&#8217;re following the trail of a humanoid wandering in a canyon; snipers point their laser pistols at him, but we can&#8217;t warn him of the danger&#8230; Listening to these sarabandes is also like passing through an honour guard in which, ad infinitum, Terry Riley, John Carpenter, Brian Eno and Wendy Carlos stand facing M83, Air, Burial, and Com Truise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/album\/7LCiE8ERh2jWr9r3ObgKbd\" width=\"300\" height=\"380\" frameborder=\"0\" allowtransparency=\"true\" allow=\"encrypted-media\"><\/iframe>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In 2018, Arman M\u00e9li\u00e8s, master songwriter and doctor of cybergloomy ambiances, released \u00c9chapp\u00e9es Belles Vol. 1, a collection of successful covers by singer-songwriters Juliette Armanet, Fishbach, Blondino, and Maissiat.
