Puerto Rico\u2019s Raquel Berr\u00edos and Luis Alfredo Del Valle \u2013 partners at home as well as in the studio \u2013 relocated to New York some years ago, growing their sexy song-and-dance duo act there. Post-Hurricane Maria, however, their island called them home, and so this new album was created there, and bears a title that translates to \u201creturn\u201d. The homecoming was bittersweet \u2013 Regresa<\/em>\u2019s songs burst with bright colours, but there\u2019s a heavy streak of blue throughout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A hint of the frivolous reggaet\u00f3n-meets-vaporwave that defined the duo\u2019s early days on the New York dive-bar circuit remains, subtly psychedelic effects abound, and the lilting Latin groove adds a nice palm-trees-at-sunset vibe. There\u2019s far more than empty calories here, though.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The music harkens back not to Tito Puente or Willie Col\u00f3n, or even Ricky Martin for that matter, but rather to the refined and stylish \u201cadult\u201d pop of the \u201980s, acts like Sade (strikingly, on \u201cM\u00edo\u201d) and Talk Talk (\u201cNydia\u201d, dedicated to the celebrated Puerto Rican cinema star who\u2019d followed a similar round-trip career path in her day). The mighty Helado Negro helps out with some rich arrangements on \u201cClub T\u00fa y Yo\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lyrically, moreover, the pair address the recent hardships facing the home they once knew, alongside more intimate domestic reflections. In short, heartbreak and hope coexist here, as does a whole lotta love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
