With a creative career spanning some 20 years and a reputation across the Channel among connoisseurs of fine songwriting, Orwell launched its seventh release, <em>Parcelle brillante<\/em>, at the end of April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the programme, eleven pieces enriched with arrangements for violin, cello and flute, electronic passages, as well as saxophone \u2013 thanks to Antoine Arlot \u2013 vibraphone and marimba ornamentations. The song \u201cJamais assez\u201d is very representative of this sonic refinement. Two singers accompany J\u00e9r\u00f4me Didelot: Armelle Pioline on \u201cJamais assez\u201d and Sugar Me on \u201cImmature\u201d. You can also hear something akin to a sitar on \u201cDors encore\u201d. There is an instrumental, \u201cD\u00e9rivation\u201d, whose retrofuturism will remind the more mature of John Barry&#8217;s theme from the TV series <em>The Persuaders<\/em>. The ensemble reminds us of Yo La Tengo&#8217;s elaborate pop \u2013 especially \u201cPourquoi savoir?\u201d \u2013 and the productions of Flavien Berger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The title of the album refers to \u201cBright Segment\u201d, a short story by the prolific science fiction and fantasy writer Theodore Sturgeon, published in 1955. J\u00e9r\u00f4me Didelot drew on Sturgeon&#8217;s themes to provide the material for the lyrics of the title track, \u201cLes mains de Bianca\u201d, and \u201cLone\u201d, on which Didelot\u2019s son reads an extract from Sturgeon&#8217;s novel <em>More Than Human<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This brilliant parcel is a marvellous illustration of what results when&nbsp; a literate approach is taken to song creation.
