On a chilly evening last February, Gab Bouchard, a determined young 20-year-old, gave birth to the album Triste pareil<\/em>. Rushing through the tracks on the album, you think first of the dark, depressing night (\u201cL’hiver se meurt\u201d, \u201cY\u00e9 pass\u00e9 o\u00f9 l’soleil?\u201d, \u201cLa vie c’t’une peine d’amour\u201d, \u201cT\u00eate vide\u201d, \u201cC’est triste pareil\u201d), then of Fernand Gignac (\u201cUne valse pour toi\u201d, \u201cRoses\u201d). One can tell that, for a rather green singer-songwriter, Gab is damn good at it. What’s more, he seems to be in good spirits, so we’re reassured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You don’t expect much from a young lyricist. As long as he moves you a little, makes you smile, imprints at least one or two verses on your cortex, you’re satisfied. But Gab Bouchard passes each of these tests with flying colours; as proof, after a few listens, the words, \u201cJ\u2019pense qu\u2019le bonheur se c\u00e2lisse de moi \u2013 Se c\u00e2lisse de toi\u201d persist in our memory like a bitter leitmotiv. \u201cY\u00e9 pass\u00e9\u201d contain a key clue to Gab Bouchard’s ancestry: when he sings, \u201cC’est pas des p’tits men\u00e9s\u201d, we think of Gros Men\u00e9 and another Bouchard, Pierre, a drummer in his own right, sideman to Fred Fortin and Olivier Langevin, and Gab’s father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is Langevin, in fact, who produced the album. It sounds solid, all the more so as Gab’s compositions stand out. We’re not swimming in molten metal \u00e0 la Gros Men\u00e9 here, but in a soup that’s just consistent enough, with a very North American flavour. Well, there are a few eruptions (to use Eddie Van Halen’s jargon) on the guitar at the end of \u201cUne valse pour toi\u201d \u2013 seems Langevin couldn’t help but have a bit of fun with his pedals. The ubiquitous Fran\u00e7ois Lafontaine manages the keyboards and Victor Tremblay-Desrosiers (half of the amazing duo Valery Vaughn), the drums.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Come on, don’t cheer up too much, Gab Bouchard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
