{"id":18310,"date":"2020-05-04T18:11:24","date_gmt":"2020-05-04T22:11:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/panm360.com\/records\/dont-say-cheese\/"},"modified":"2020-05-05T10:16:37","modified_gmt":"2020-05-05T14:16:37","slug":"dont-say-cheese-messer-chups","status":"publish","type":"records","link":"https:\/\/panm360.com\/en\/records\/dont-say-cheese-messer-chups\/","title":{"rendered":"Don\u2019t Say Cheese"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Russia\u2019s leading contribution to the retro reverb revival of the last few decades is Messer Chups, which is tremolo tsar Oleg Gitaracula and his rhythm section, bassist Zombierella and drummer Rockin\u2019 Eugene \u2013 a pair that are almost literal incarnations of <em>The Rocky &amp; Bullwinkle Show<\/em>\u2019s Boris and Natasha.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their latest of many albums was released on the first of May, which would have been like the Fourth of July for these comrades from Saint Petersburg, were we still in the Cold War era. That\u2019s the antiquated zeitgeist the trio wallow in, though it isn\u2019t Soviet kitsch that turns their cranks, but rather all-American Atomic Age trash culture \u2013 particularly vintage horror movies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Funny thing about Messer Chups is how much more conventional they\u2019ve become over the 20 years they\u2019ve been at it. Their early records were rife with snatches of B-movie dialogue, Halloween sound effects, and strange instrumentation. They were like the creature-feature complement to the kitsch retrofuturism of Man or Astro-man? in a drive-in double bill. Both bands treated the proverbial rock \u2019n\u2019 roll garage as a science lab.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Don\u2019t Say Cheese<\/em> sticks tight to straightforward surf rock, tossing in in a bit of burlesque R&amp;B grind (\u201cCadabra Box Pandora Strip\u201d), and several curious covers. These include a variant on the prototypical synth-pop tune \u201cPopcorn\u201d, which they\u2019ve covered before, and a surprisingly beautiful instrumental of Chris Isaak\u2019s tearjerker \u201cWicked Game\u201d.
