{"id":17194,"date":"2020-04-22T12:10:44","date_gmt":"2020-04-22T16:10:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/panm360.com\/?post_type=records&#038;p=17194"},"modified":"2020-04-22T13:25:09","modified_gmt":"2020-04-22T17:25:09","slug":"the-fun-ones-rjd2","status":"publish","type":"records","link":"https:\/\/panm360.com\/en\/records\/the-fun-ones-rjd2\/","title":{"rendered":"The Fun Ones"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ramble Jon Krohn was already a hero to those in the know, for his daredevil displays of turntablism and his dope discs on Def Jux, when \u201cA Beautiful Mine\u201d off 2006\u2019s <em>Magnificent City<\/em> became the theme for <em>Mad Men<\/em>. He came off as a bit of a beat-building James Bond \u2013 suave, elegant, a bit perverse, with sharp wit, a sturdy right hook, and various clever tricks concealed in his shoe heel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Having earned his merit badges, RJD2 has only so much to prove, and he doesn\u2019t try to prove much on his latest album. Following 2016\u2019s intense <em>Dame Fortune<\/em>, and the strange synth-tone detour of <em>Tendrils<\/em> (as The Insane Warrior), his latest is about little more than having a good time, as the title suggests. Let\u2019s call it his Casual Friday album, blended with a bit of Throwback Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A key sound element here is chunks of phone chats with contemporaries like Phonte, Mr. Lif, and Kid Koala, and a key theme is maintaining the flame of hip hop\u2019s golden age, with the soul, funk, and disco that fed it. The excellent \u201cA Genuine Gentleman\u201d, reuniting RJD2 with veteran MC Aceyalone, demonstrates this decisively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some of the games at RJD2\u2019s little get-together kinda suck, like the vexing \u201c20 Grand Hotel\u201d (I\u2019m sorry, is that slap bass supposed to funny?). And of course, his idea of fun includes detours in the dark and dastardly \u2013 \u201cHigh Street Will Never Die\u201d offers no assurance that someone might not get got on that stretch of asphalt, and \u201cMy Very Own Burglar Neighbor\u201d has a delightfully spooky streak as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What the listener will likely keep coming back to, though, is the big, blatant, basic-model bumpers, especially the convincing opener \u201cNo Helmet Up Indianola\u201d and the very generous \u201cFlocking To The Nearest Machine\u201d \u2013 easily the most fun of these <em>Fun Ones<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 350px; height: 786px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=2623849685\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=0687f5\/transparent=true\/\" seamless=\"\"><a href=\"http:\/\/officialrjd2.bandcamp.com\/album\/the-fun-ones\">The Fun Ones by RJD2<\/a><\/iframe>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ramble Jon Krohn was already a hero to those in the know, for his daredevil displays of turntablism and his dope discs on Def Jux, when \u201cA Beautiful Mine\u201d off 2006\u2019s Magnificent City became the theme for Mad Men.
