The powerfully emotional music carries with dignity the message, proclaimed loud and clear, of recognition for the trans community and its integration into a complete and unified humanity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">In other words, through one of the most tried-and-true, holistic, and unifying musical forms (the Requiem), Yee wished:<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote has-medium-font-size\"><blockquote><p><em>\u201cto give trans people the dignity of being grieved\u2014the<\/em><br><em>kind of communal space that we\u2019re so often denied. This isn\u2019t just a requiem<\/em><br><em>for the dead; it\u2019s a requiem for the living. A space to feel sadness,<\/em><br><em>to reflect, to rage, to remember\u2014and also to love and to find peace.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"NOVUS Renewal: Undivided | PREMIERE | Andrew Yee\u2019s Trans Requiem | Trinity Church NYC\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/q3u564UWafc?start=1491&amp;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The music is expressive and consonant (with the exception of a few rare dissonant rough edges), and unfolds with a breadth worthy of a good film score, yet without too much pomposity. Episodes of spoken word are particularly effective, such as the movement titled <em>Light<\/em> in tribute to the trans activist Cecilia Gentili, where Andrew Yee themselves recites a touching text about their own memories of Gentili, accompanied by the dark vocalisations of the bass voices in the choir. The effect is striking and memorable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The two soloists, soprano Breanna Sinclair\u00e9 and tenor Katherine Goforth, both trans artists, are called upon to perform occasionally, but each time with conviction. Sinclair\u00e9&#8217;s soprano is beautifully lyrical, and one can easily imagine her in Mahler or Strauss. Goforth&#8217;s tenor is very pleasant, with a beautiful roundness in the lower register and a projection that one can tell is effective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">ome texts immerse us in the unsettling intimacy that inhabits most trans people, in one way or another, and this daily. Here <em>I am afraid:<\/em><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote has-medium-font-size\"><blockquote><p><em>I Am Afraid<\/em><br><em>A man<\/em><br><em>Has started talking to me<\/em><br><em>I keep my back to him<\/em><br><em>My long hair tucked behind my ear &#8211; is a shield<\/em><br><em>I am afraid of this man<\/em><br><em>I am afraid<\/em><br><em>But not how he feels about me<\/em><br><em>I\u2019m afraid of how he will view his own sexuality<\/em><br><em>If he sees my face<\/em><br><em>Which has less makeup than I want<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Or again, <em>Death Before Detransition<\/em>, the most powerfully activist moment of the whole requiem (based on a poem by Jennifer Espinoza):<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote has-medium-font-size\"><blockquote><p><em>You will have to pry\/ my gender from my cold\/ dead hands\/<\/em><br><em>and even then\/ all you will hold\/ is an idea I carved\/ into the<\/em><br><em>side of the world\/ with fire<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The Trinity Church Choir in New York and the NOVUS ensemble adorn a score that aims to be highly dramatic with sumptuous sounds, fully benefiting from the rich colours given to it. All of this under the attentive direction of Melissa Attebury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Trans Requiem<\/em> is a work as much as a manifesto, but above all, it is music that knows how to touch and move with intelligence and conviction. I think Montreal would be an excellent place to hear it.
