Recently, a set of <em>Preludes<\/em>, a <em>Concerto grosso<\/em> (on the theme of tango), a <em>Cello Concerto<\/em>, a <em>Requiem<\/em> (commissioned by Francis Choini\u00e8re and his FILMharmonique). Further back in the past, a violin concerto, another for piano, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">A set of Four seasons was apparently missing from the lineup. We are well acquainted with those of Vivaldi of course, to which many other composers have responded over time: Boismortier in France, Haydn in Austria, Raff in Germany\/Switzerland, Glazunov and Tchaikovsky in Russia, Noskowski in Poland, Piazzolla in Argentina, Glass in the United States, and many more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">But Quebec deserved its own, and, as it was almost to be expected given the composer&#8217;s expressive and lyrical nature lends itself so easily to it, Fran\u00e7ois Dompierre is the one who got to do it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-9-16 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Les Quatre Saisons du Qu\u00e9bec : III. Valse et contredanse d\u2019automne\" width=\"422\" height=\"750\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xTmRJlbh0c8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Voici donc un ensemble de <em>Quatre saisons<\/em> inspir\u00e9es de la nature qu\u00e9b\u00e9coise, command\u00e9es et cr\u00e9\u00e9es par Francis Choini\u00e8re et la section de cordes de son orchestre. S\u2019ajoute l\u2019excellente violoniste Isabella d&#8217;\u00c9loize Perron, qui confirme le choix de Dompierre de rester attach\u00e9 au format vivaldien, celui d\u2019un ensemble pour soliste et orchestre \u00e0 cordes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Si Vivaldi avait opt\u00e9 pour un concerto en trois mouvements pour chacune des saisons (donc quatre concertos pour 12 mouvements au total), Dompierre demeure plus modeste avec le choix d\u2019un format en quatre mouvements, illustrant chacun une saison. Un seul grand concerto donc, o\u00f9 chaque partie est bien s\u00fbr associ\u00e9e soit au printemps, \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9t\u00e9, \u00e0 l\u2019automne ou \u00e0 l\u2019hiver, mais en plus exprim\u00e9e \u00e0 travers une danse traditionnelle. Les titres sont en ce sens r\u00e9v\u00e9lateurs (et fort attrayants) : <em>Rigaudon de printemps<\/em>; <em>Complainte d\u2019\u00e9t\u00e9; Valse et contredanse d\u2019automne<\/em>; et <em>Quadrille d\u2019hiver<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Le <em>Rigaudon de Printemps<\/em> a bonne allure, comme un cheval au trot, passant en milieu de mouvement dans un d\u00e9cor pacifi\u00e9 et chaleureux telle une premi\u00e8re belle et chaude journ\u00e9e de Mai. L\u2019\u00c9t\u00e9 et sa <em>Complainte<\/em> sont port\u00e9s par une m\u00e9lodie touchante et fortement m\u00e9lancolique, alors que l\u2019Automne redonne un peu de pep dans les souliers avec une valse l\u00e9g\u00e8rement swingante, qui semble parfois h\u00e9siter sur ses assises. Des pizzicatos et des pouss\u00e9es de l\u2019orchestre semblent imiter le temps incertain de cette saison, ou les feuilles qui tergiversent entre s\u2019accrocher encore un peu ou se laisser tomber doucement au sol. \u00c0 mi parcours, une contredanse plus anim\u00e9e, de style irlandais, excite un peu le d\u00e9roulement avant que la derni\u00e8re partie du morceau soit le th\u00e9\u00e2tre d\u2019\u00e9changes dynamiques entre les deux th\u00e8mes contrast\u00e9s, qui finissent par se terminer sur une posture incertaine et une \u00e9vocation finale du deuxi\u00e8me th\u00e8me se dissipant graduellement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Le dernier mouvement est un <em>Quadrille joyeux<\/em>, qui laisse entendre que l\u2019hiver qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois, loin des clich\u00e9s catastrophiques, est \u00e9galement une saison empreinte de plaisirs, de c\u00e9l\u00e9brations et de bonne humeur.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">De courtes citations des <em>Saisons<\/em> de Vivaldi, des clins d\u2019oeil plut\u00f4t, pars\u00e8ment l\u2019oeuvre, ainsi que d\u2019autres brindilles tir\u00e9es de celles de Piazzolla, diss\u00e9min\u00e9es parcimonieusement afin d\u2019allumer quelques \u00e9tincelles dans l\u2019esprit des musicophiles plus f\u00e9rus.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">La soliste, Isabella d\u2019\u00c9loize Perron, rend tr\u00e8s bien justice \u00e0 la musique de son compatriote et a\u00een\u00e9, avec la bonne dose de swing dans le rythme et l\u2019articulation, ainsi que le lyrisme souhait\u00e9 dans les \u00e9pisodes chantants, toujours importants chez Dompierre. Les cordes du FILMharmonique ne manquent pas de velours, ce qui est tr\u00e8s appropri\u00e9, mais sans alourdir la n\u00e9cessaire clart\u00e9 d\u2019une musique qui se veut plus chambriste que r\u00e9ellement symphonique.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Du grand Dompierre, comme on l\u2019aime, c\u2019est-\u00e0-dire un classiciste \u00e9duqu\u00e9 qui ma\u00eetrise comme peu d\u2019autres l\u2019art \u00e9l\u00e9gant de la belle et bonne fusion entre la rigueur d\u2019un art s\u00e9rieux et l\u2019attrait assum\u00e9 de la s\u00e9duction populaire.Here is a set of <em>Four Seasons<\/em> inspired by Quebec&#8217;s nature, commissioned and created by Francis Choini\u00e8re and the string section of his orchestra. The excellent violinist Isabella d&#8217;\u00c9loize Perron joins, confirming Dompierre&#8217;s choice to stick to the Vivaldian format, that of an ensemble for soloist and string orchestra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">If Vivaldi had opted for a three-movement concerto for each season (thus four concertos for a total of 12 movements), Dompierre remains more modest with the choice of a four-movement format, each illustrating a season. So, just one grand concerto (well, not that long at about 20 minutes), where each part is of course associated with either spring, summer, autumn, or winter, but also expressed through a traditional dance. The titles are in this sense revealing (and quite appealing): <em>Spring Rigaudon<\/em>; <em>Summer Lament;<\/em> <em>Autumn Waltz and Contredanse<\/em>; and <em>Winter Quadrille.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The <em>Rigaudon<\/em> of Spring has a good pace, like a trotting horse, passing in the middle of the movement in a peaceful and warm setting like the first beautiful and hot day of May. Summer and its <em>Lament<\/em> are carried by a touching and deeply melancholic melody, while Autumn brings a bit of pep back into the shoes with a slightly swinging waltz, which sometimes seems to hesitate on its footing. Pizzicatos and orchestral pushes seem to imitate the uncertain weather of this season, or the leaves that hesitate between clinging on a little longer or gently falling to the ground. Halfway through, a more lively Irish-style contredance enlivens the progression before the final part of the piece becomes the stage for dynamic exchanges between the two contrasting themes, which ultimately end in an uncertain posture and a final evocation of the second theme gradually dissipating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The final movement is a joyful <em>Quadrille<\/em>, which suggests that the Quebec winter, far from catastrophic clich\u00e9s, is also a season filled with pleasures, celebrations, and good cheer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Short quotes from Vivaldi&#8217;s <em>Seasons<\/em>, rather winks, are sprinkled throughout the work, as well as other snippets taken from Piazzolla, sparingly scattered to ignite a few sparks in the minds of more ardent music lovers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The soloist, Isabella d\u2019\u00c9loize Perron, does great justice to the music of her compatriot and elder, with the right dose of swing in the rhythm and articulation, as well as the desired lyricism in the singing episodes, always important in Dompierre&#8217;s work. The strings of the FILMharmonique have a good velvety wear, which is very appropriate, but without weighing down the necessary clarity of music that aims to be more chamber-like than truly symphonic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Some great Dompierre stuff here, like that of other gems he gave us overt time.
