Well, here they are, a decade and three albums later, and they\u2019re still having fun \u2013 and awful lot of it, if <em>Curandero<\/em> is any indication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">OM jefe Sergio Mendoza is also a member of Tucson\u2019s Calexico, and the bands share a list of basic ingredients sourced on both sides of the border, as well as a somewhat cinematic sensibility. Beyond that, though, Calexico and Mendoza\u2019s Orkesta are almost literally night and day \u2013 the former\u2019s lonesome \u201cdesert noir\u201d drenched in a somber midnight mood, the latter\u2019s bilingual \u201cMexican mambo\u201d sociable (guests abound on <em>Curandero<\/em>) and soaked in sunshine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Opener \u201cLa Paleta\u201d, a muscular, uptempo cumbia rocker, kicks the door open, and from there, like some lurid loter\u00eda card for your loudspeakers, <em>Curandero<\/em> proceeds to do something different at every turn. \u201cHead Above Water\u201d is a sparkling, buoyant bit of tropical ska, while \u201cEres Oficial\u201d and \u201cWhy You Looking That Way\u201d bounce around some bubblegum boogaloo. Elsewhere, there\u2019s the sentimental, psychotropic dub-reggae ranchera of \u201cMe dejo Llevar\u201d, the 8-bit ornamentation of \u201cEl Chumina\u201d, and the outlandish mambo \u201cBora Bora\u201d.
