The DJ and production duo of Jos\u00e9 Alvarado and Mani Romero (collaborating, on this EP, with fellow Cartagenan Pablo Messier) slice and dice their hometown\u2019s musical history \u2013 with evident affection, mind you \u2013 and generate jams that are playful, punchy, and highly persuasive. The trio of tracks here kicks off with \u201cEl Publico\u201d, a sturdy chunk of midtempo digital cumbia with a dash of dub. The pressure rises with \u201cEl Espeluque\u201d, a bouncing, fidgety bit of champeta \u2013 it\u2019s got a bit of bite, but won\u2019t draw blood. Things wrap up with a nice, shiny remix of \u201cMambo Bado\u201d, a cheerful number from Orchestra Makassy, East African soukous band of the late \u201970s.
