The hazy and bright shoegaze of Whitelands opens the album skipping \u2014 yes, <em>skipping<\/em> \u2014 which for a shoegaze band is practically revolutionary. &#8220;Heat of the Summer&#8221; sounds like joy that has been through the laundry and come out softer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">But spend long enough inside this record and the brightness becomes strange. The sun here is the kind that illuminates hospital waiting rooms and empty bank accounts. Somewhere in the middle, the album changes posture \u2014 the Britpop breezes thin out, the weight sets in, and a guest appearance from Emma Anderson on &#8220;Sparklebaby&#8221; arrives like a voice transmitted from another dimension.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Sunlight Echoes<\/em> feels like an album built by people the universe genuinely tried to break. It&#8217;s radiant, aching, occasionally euphoric and quietly miraculous.
