CODE Quartet is of the second kind. I&#8217;d only use capital letters if I didn&#8217;t fear sounding like a certain orange president. The cr\u00e8me de la cr\u00e8me of the cr\u00e8me de la cr\u00e8me: Lex French on trumpet, Christine Jensen on saxes, Adrian Vedady on double bass and Jim Doxas on drums. Each artist is at the top of his game and among the world&#8217;s elite on his or her instrument. And all of them are Montrealers. What a source of pride! CODE Red is the band&#8217;s second album, following on from <em>Genealogy<\/em>, which my colleague Alain Brunet praised (<a href=\"https:\/\/panm360.com\/records\/code-quartet-genealogy\/\"><strong>READ HIS REVIEW OF GENEALOGY HERE<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; in French).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"CODE QUARTET LIVE: Album Advance Release @upstairsjazzbar\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/VJr_0UkcTE0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whereas <em>Genealogy <\/em>teased out the modernist, sometimes atonal, heritage of Ornette Coleman, CODE Red shifts the focus towards hard bop, or even post-bop, with its chromatic but well-planted harmonies. Assimilated by four encyclopaedic minds of jazz playing in all its facets, the learned traditions of Coltrane, Mingus, Shorter, Horace (Silver) and Miles coalesce here in a brilliant mastery of the art of improvised music, both historically informed and originally reinterpreted.
