Blondshell\u2019s If You Asked For a Picture<\/em> is a modest continuation of her alt-rock confessional style, but it rarely feels like more than a cautious extension of what she\u2019s already proven she can do with her debut in 2023. This new one is competently made, but there\u2019s a sense of diminishing urgency, as though the sharpness that cut through on her debut has been dulled by over-consideration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Take \u201cThumbtack,\u201d the opener. It wants to be sly and simmering, but it plays more like a shrug. Much of the album feels this way: smartly arranged, occasionally poignant, but often, emotionally static. \u201cT&A,\u201d despite its confrontational title, lands like a song that\u2019s already been workshopped and workshopped into docility. There’s a lot of thematic nodding to self-doubt, miscommunication, and gender politics, but little of the messy immediacy that made Blondshell’s earlier work punch harder. I’m not as pulled into these hooks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cArms\u201d and \u201cWhat\u2019s Fair\u201d sound like songs that should build to something \u2014 a reckoning, an epiphany \u2014 but they plateau early and stay there. \u201c23\u2019s A Baby\u201d is perhaps the clearest attempt at sneering generational commentary, but the delivery feels more performative than raw. It\u2019s not bad, just safe \u2014 like Blondshell knows she\u2019s got the credentials to be profound, so she doesn\u2019t push herself to actually be it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The production, courtesy of Yves Rothman, is clean to a fault. There\u2019s little room for spontaneity \u2014 every strum, beat, and breath is locked into a structure that feels overly rehearsed. Even the louder moments, like \u201cEvent of a Fire,\u201d seem more like simulations of catharsis than the real thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Blondshell is talented \u2014 there\u2019s wit and clarity in her lyrics, and her voice can carry real weight when she lets it. But If You Asked For a Picture<\/em> mostly feels like a record content to simmer without ever boiling over. It\u2019s solid alt-rock, but not memorable alt-rock. It’s alt-rock from a newer, good singer-songwriter in a sea of adepts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
