The debut LP, <em>Compare What&#8217;s There<\/em>, from last March is a tough follow-up, but this little EP hits like a steel-toed boot and still manages to croon, sneer, and shimmy its way into your bloodstream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBig Stepper\u201d kicks the door in with that rubber-band bass snapping like it&#8217;s pissed off and caffeinated. Drums punch in like a time clock ready to explode, and then\u2014boom\u2014a guitar line slices through the muck as vocalist Jeroen and Marrit (who also rips on bass) jump into feversih vocal melodies. Melody in <em>this<\/em> <em>barn<\/em>? Believe it. \u201cHard Times\u201d is a two-minute sermon for the disillusioned, barked out over a beat that sounds like it was assembled in a basement with a busted metronome and a case of beer. It\u2019s punk, but not sloppy\u2014tight like a snare drum wrapped in barbed wire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Real Farmer - Mislocated (Official video)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Ryc_n40wy0s?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">By the time \u201cMislocated\u201d rolls in, the band\u2019s found their strut. The bass is practically <em>dancing<\/em>, and the guitar licks aren\u2019t afraid to flirt with crunchy beauty. But don\u2019t worry, it still sounds like it was recorded in a crumbling squat with mould on the amps. This song comes with a scratchy, psychedelic VHS cassette age music video from visual artist H\u00e9ctor Garcia Martin, inspired by the &#8220;world falling apart and the feeling of leaving\u00a0it\u00a0behind.&#8221; The satellite ground station location gives the video a bygone, brutalist edge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOnce More\u201d ends the whole EP thing as a romantic and deranged swing. It\u2019s got swagger. It\u2019s the sound of a band realizing they don\u2019t have to snarl <em>all<\/em> the time, but they can seduce, too. <em>RF II<\/em> is Real Farmer growing as a band, but not going soft. It\u2019s post-punk with a pulse, a scuffed leather heart, and a snide grin.
