He formed his trio in 2023 with Sasha Desjardins on piano and Alexandre Mass\u00e9 on drums. His references include Avishai Cohen and Larry Grenadier, but also Dhafer Youssef, which betrays a strong interest in Eastern music, in this case Arabic. That&#8217;s why we also find the excellent Mohammed Masmoudi on oud on a few tracks on the album, Le Vent, the trio&#8217;s first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Philippe Mass\u00e9 Le Vent Pr\u00e9sentation\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Q7qkGeqM7MA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">You can sense these Middle Eastern melodic and harmonic inflections from the very first tracks, although they go further afield, towards more modern Western landscapes. Mass\u00e9&#8217;s palette is attractive, both in terms of the discourse and the energy conveyed, with no showboating but with a drive that holds your attention. The collective groove is intuitive, organic and highly communicative.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Fall Live - Philippe Mass\u00e9\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/BWrfIZNuEcM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Mass\u00e9 is a spontaneous and assertive improviser, capable of making his instrument resonate with a fair amount of power.
